ABOUT WILD TURKEY
The distillery for Wild Turkey Bourbon is in Kentucky, situated on a deep limestone shelf on the Kentucky River. The shelf acts as a natural filter and provides the distillery with crystal clear water, vital to making such a high-quality product. Wild Turkey features the legendary father and son Master Distilling team of Jimmy and Eddie Russell, who have over 100 years of collective experience working at the Wild Turkey distillery.
The famous Wild Turkey brand name first came about back in 1940 when distillery executive Thomas McCarthey took a few warehouse samples on a wild turkey hunting trip with a group of friends. The following year, his friends asked him for “some of that wild turkey whiskey” and the brand was born.
Wild Turkey is distilled and put into new oak barrels at a much lower ABV than most bourbons. This results in a much richer flavor, as less is cooked out during the production process. Ageing in the highest quality new American oak barrels with the heaviest char available (the Number 4 “alligator” char), imparts a smooth flavor and deep amber color to the whiskey. The barrels are filled at the distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. Website: wildturkey.com.

One thousand, eight hundred, and twenty-five days. Five years. That’s a long time, but it has come (and gone) in the blink of an eye. Today - this day - marks five years of ,,Joseph Bourbon and the bourbon blog. Five years ago, with a bit of cajoling from daughter #2 (you may know her better as my silent partner in our 2-Minute Tasting videos) encouraged me to start sharing my love of bourbon, history, and culture with the community.
Over the past 1,800+ days, we’ve shared content on distillery tours, bourbon tastings, delicious recipes, lifestyle, fast horses, whiskey business, bourbon lore and history. And in all of it, I hope that guests and visitors gain and appreciate a love of this native American spirit.
We began five years ago with some interesting pairings (,,Girl Scout Cookies and bourbon) and telling the story of where it all began for me - at ,,Woodford Reserve. Over the years, we’ve made countless new friends on tours and guided tastings. We’ve swept in family members, in-laws, friends, and neighbors. This past year, daughter #1 married (and you found me working the bar at the reception) and we took my bourbon buddy and son-in-law #2 back to where it all began at Woodford Reserve. Over time, even Mrs. Joseph Bourbon has enjoyed the tours, the history, the food, and the bourbon tastings. And she has a knack for finding really good bourbons, as her liking to the bourbon rises directly in correlation with the price.
During the past year, we once again enjoyed watching fast horses while slow-sipping bourbon at ,,Keeneland Racetrack for the spring and fall meets. We added a couple more tours to our list of distilleries, making visits to Lux Row and Log Still Distillery. We continued to drop-in and visit some of our favorite distillery stops in Kentucky, picking up allocated bourbons, limited releases, and catching some photo opps and extended conversations with Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame members Jimmy Russell and Freddie Johnson.
Throughout the year, I continued to share my passion and love of bourbon lore through guided tastings and events (if you’re interested, you can find more information ,,here). We delivered several sessions at a local store, including a Taste of the Trace (highlighting Buffalo Trace products). We ended the year helping out our local FFA chapter with a fundraising event titled History in a Glass, sharing how the American farmer, history, and whiskey are all woven together. For 2024, we’re adding to our ,,Certified Bourbon Steward designation, when in April, we’ll be headed to Louisville, Kentucky to complete the Executive Bourbon Steward program.
In summary, life (and this blog) is a journey - not a destination. While it’s about bourbon, it’s more about the people we meet and the experiences we have along the way. There will always be more, good, well-aged bourbon. But us - we’re the fragile piece. So, sit back, enjoy the day, and enjoy the company you’re with, and sip the good stuff nice and slow. Celebrate with me as we enjoy another trip around the sun.

Kentucky is common word on Bourbon labels – you’ll find it as often as “Old” or “Straight,” but some feel the statehood should command a bit more respect. Part of this is due to the dozens of chapters American whiskey history that were written in Kentucky. Part of that respect, however, is in part due to Damon Thayer.
Thayer’s interest in bourbon began as a simple story of politics. A champion of industry and a Kentucky state senator, Thayer sought in his early terms to ensure that all of Kentucky’s core businesses – bourbon and horse racing – were able to flourish without government interference.
“I’ve always been in the business of tearing down artificial barriers to free enterprise,” says Thayer.
And the story of government interference in bourbon is long. Even in bourbon’s home state, there’s a history of restrictive rules beginning before Prohibition that still stretches into today. A mere five years ago, visitors couldn’t purchase a cocktail at a distillery, or buy a rare bottle without getting lucky to find it at a retailer.
As Thayer and the rest of the Kentucky legislature have worked to change these constricting laws, they’ve opened the door to a whole new world of bourbon tourism. Restaurants can now pour rare vintage bottles purchased from collectors, bourbon lovers who make the pilgrimage to distilleries can both enjoy a drink and buy a bottle, and (most recently) distilleries can even open off site satellite tasting rooms, to give even more people a chance to try their rare products.
Best of all for consumers, a huge variety of new bourbon labels is showing up on their shelves. Unique blends and finishes, proofing and aging that pushes the envelope, and more have popped up in the past ten years – and one of those new labels is owned by Thayer himself.
Thayer admits that despite his Kentucky upbringing, he didn’t know much about bourbon until a few years into his forties.
“Actually,” he laughs, “I barely drank bourbon until after my divorce.”
So with the help of his friend Andre Regard, an equine attorney descended from Basil Hayden, the two set out to make their own bourbon.
Why Kentucky Means More
While the brand is currently sourcing all their liquid, it is laws laid down with Thayer’s help that will continue to enforce their quality. In an age of popup brands sourcing whiskey of varying quality from all across the world, Kentucky Senator is going to be tied to a tighter standard. While we’ve loved a range of releases from both distilleries, you won’t find any Dickel or MGP in his blends – just Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey.
“If the name includes Kentucky, the bourbon in the bottle has to be from Kentucky,” explains Thayer. So old school bottom shelf brands like Kentucky Gentleman, revived brands like Brown-Forman’s King of Kentucky, and Thayer’s own brand Kentucky Senator will always have one thing in common – the whiskey inside is legally required to have been distilled and aged in Kentucky.
And to double down on the Kentucky connection, Thayer and Regard are naming each annual small batch release after a U.S. Senator from Kentucky. (As a side note, history buffs should visit kysenatorbourbon.com for deep dives into the namesakes of these bourbons – they’re both fascinating and entertaining.)
The first release of Kentucky Senator was named for Alben W. Barkley, a senator from Kentucky who eventually served as Vice President under President Truman. It hit shelves in 2020, coming in big and bold at 15 years and 107 proof with notes of dark chocolate, peanut brittle, and a finish of charred oak. While Thayer and his partner, lawyer Andre Regard, can’t reveal their source, we do know it came from a heritage distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky.
The following releases, all coming from a different but equally respected Bardstown distillery, will share DNA. After their first launch sold out in 2020, Thayer and his partners worked to source barrels that they plan to use for a total of four years’ worth of releases – one each year as the barrels age.
So in 2021, Kentucky Senator released the first expression from this set of barrels – a six year, 107 proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon named for William J. Deboe, the first ever Republican senator from Kentucky. More balanced and less bold than the initial 15 year release, we found notes of strawberry syrup, toasted walnuts, and caramel. CSPAN fans will find the inside joke in the age statement and name – Deboe was a one term Senator, serving for just six years.
As this set of barrels continues to age, Kentucky Senator released their third expression in summer 2022 – a seven year, 107 proof Kentucky Bourbon named for one of the most influential names in the bourbon world, even today. John G. Carlisle, the leader of the “Bourbon Democrats,” famously helped pass the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897. Before the FDA approved the ingredients in your skin care, candy, and cold medication, Carlisle helped create laws to ensure pure and safe whiskey.
The Bottled-in-Bond Act lays out a series of regulations that go above and beyond for bourbon makers. In short, its an agreement to craft bourbon to a standardized 100 proof, a minimum four-year age, and a uniformity in age and recipe within the bottle that distillers can make with the government in exchange for tax breaks. As the sponsoring senator for this landmark legislation and future Secretary of the Treasury for Grover Cleveland, Carlisle’s name and portrait appeared on the tax stamps atop bottled-in-bond whiskeys for decades.
In 2023, the eight-year expression from this same family of barrels debuted with tremendous success, ranking 58 in Fred Minnick’s “Top 100 Bourbons of The Year” list. They threw an homage event in Somerset, KY, hometown of the release’s namesake, John Sherman Cooper. In Northern Kentucky’s Covington, home of John G. Carlisle, they had an official launch party at Bourbon renowned Smoke Justis.
The following images are of the Liquor Barn Private Barrel Selection “John Sherman Cooper” 8 year 107 Proof. All photo credit to Richie Wireman.
Looking at the future…
In 2024 we can expect the nine year expression and the flavor nuances that accompany a full year of aging. And following that? The brand is already working with some big names in bourbon to lay down barrels for their next releases. Thayer is forecasting for the future with mentions of new make from Green River Distillery in Owensboro that’s aging as we speak – but really, his focus isn’t the distillery name, only the distillery’s quality.
“We want to make these collectible bottles with both good whiskey and a good story,” says Thayer.
The key transition being a pivot from NDP (Non Distilling Producer) to Contract Distilling. The latter being a more hands on approach in working with a producing distillery in making the distillate, which in turn goes into the barrel. Thayer notes a Contract Distilling relationship is in the works with Frankfort, KY based Whiskey Thief Distilling. He noted having different mash bills to go with different Senator releases.
The dynamic duo, Thayer and Regard, have already embarked on an exhilarating whiskey immersed journey. It will be exciting to see how the next chapters unfold for these Bourbon State mavericks and their passion for all things Kentucky.

An exciting new chapter is afoot for Lexington, Kentucky based RD1 Spirits as a ground break ceremony this week commenced for a new $4.8 million 10,000+ square foot Distillery Homeplace Experience.
The award winning Kentucky Straight Bourbon brand will soon call its new home and will serve as the anchoring tenant at the destination development area The Commons. This is a big deal for the city as the newest entertainment district with its own special blend of uniting life, work, and play. All this within less than a mile from Lexington’s vibrant downtown scene.
RD1 Distillery at The Commons will honor Lexington’s bourbon history dating back to 1865 while showcasing modern-day innovation with wood finishing. RD1’s new brand destination will more than double the size of RD1’s existing Tasting Room & Gift Shop on Manchester Road, complementing this fast-growing, Lexington-based brand.
“RD1 is expanding the boundaries of Lexington’s Distillery District and strengthening the appeal of what the great city of Lexington has to offer,” said Mark Stoops, RD1 shareholder and advisor, and Lexington business leader. “As one of the newest brands added to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, RD1 Distillery at The Commons will help boost hometown pride and contribute to the vibrant, winning atmosphere of our community.”
Guest Experience
With the new distillery, RD1 will offer additional, customized experiences for guests to explore RD1’s portfolio of Kentucky Straight Bourbon and wood-finished, bourbon expressions.
The two-story RD1 Distillery at The Commons features outdoor seating areas on both levels, overlooking a historic water tower, a visible marker for the entertainment district that will feature RD1 artwork.
The brand destination will include:
interactive, history-meets-innovation experience of Lexington’s bourbon milestones
fermentation-to-distillation tour
four private tasting rooms
a glass-enclosed R&D lab for wood finishing of Kentucky Straight Bourbon and barrel thieving
a VIP speakeasy tasting room
a craft cocktail bar
a gift shop
space for private events.
“RD1 looks to allow guests to experience bourbon in a way that’s most comfortable to them,” said Mike Tetterton, chief executive officer of RD1 and long-time Lexington resident and entrepreneur. “For most of us, that starts with exploring your palate. From there, we like to ask ‘what else can bourbon do?’ And we fill that curiosity by experimenting with different woods that delicately dance with the bourbon and really draw some exceptional flavor profiles.”
An R&D Distillery
RD1 Distillery at The Commons will include an 800-gallon pot still that is the hub of the operation. In addition, the location will also house a 175-gallon pot still, a 750-gallon fermenter, and a 1,000-gallon mash cooker. The distillery is expected to produce one barrel per week for the sole purpose of research and development. RD1 will continue to produce its Kentucky Straight Bourbon at Western Kentucky Distilling in Beaver Dam, Kentucky, under 8th-generation Master Distiller Jacob Call.
Bourbon industry veteran Don Hardwick of Louisville – also a shareholder in RD1 – is leading the distillery design of RD1 Distillery at The Commons.
“We want RD1 Distillery at The Commons to serve as a cornerstone of education, exploration, and entertainment in Lexington,” Tetterton added. “As a brand founded by Lexington entrepreneurs, we are motivated by the bourbon giants of our past and look to honor them with bourbon growth right here in our hometown.”
In December 2023, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear announced approval of $521,000 in incentives for RD1’s project from the Kentucky Tourism Development Finance Authority, upon recommendation by the Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet.
“This exciting new investment will provide a great bourbon experience for visitors to the Fayette County area. As we continue to see growth in Kentucky’s signature bourbon industry, projects like this are also adding momentum to our tourism efforts,” said Gov. Beshear. “I want to congratulate RD1 Spirits’ leadership and look forward to the positive impact the project will have on the tourism industry and the local community.”
OPENING DATE: RD1 Distillery at The Commons is expected to open in August 2024. Once fully operational, RD1 looks to create 11 full-time job positions.
The RD1 Story
As a brand founded to celebrate meaningful firsts, RD1 – which stands for Registered Distillery One – was founded in 2020 to help keep the story alive of some of Lexington’s first bourbon entrepreneurs, who founded Ashland Distillery in 1865. Ashland, which later changed ownership and became more widely known as the William Tarr Distillery, was Lexington’s first federally registered distillery.
“We’re not only fascinated by bourbon’s rich history but also in writing that next chapter,” Tetterton said. “It’s an honor and responsibility that we take seriously to help grow Fayette County and contribute to Kentucky as a whole.”
The brand has experienced tremendous growth in 2023, including expanded distribution to 16 states with an expectation of 25 states by the end of 2024. RD1 earned 66 awards in 2023, the majority gold and platinum for high marks in taste categories.
THE COMMONS
RD1 Distillery at The Commons will be located at 113 Turner Commons Way in Lexington and will sit at the entertainment district entrance, right off Main Street.
The Commons features include:

A 90-minute VIP adventure for $139.99. Guests will taste a variety of Pursuit’s award-winning whiskeys, learn all about mashbills, blending, and maturation from our expert guides, partake in their own private barrel selection, and then fill a personalized bottle to take home.
This is a rare chance to check off a bucket list item by taking part in the barrel picking process that is typically reserved for only the whiskey elite. Instead of pulling a lever and watching your bottle fill from a tube, guests will fill their own private select whiskey using a whiskey thief straight from the barrel.
“Pursuit United Breakdown“
The second experience is a 45-minute deep dive into Pursuit’s limited small-batch bourbon for $35. Guests will taste the individual distillates that make up Pursuit United at cask strength, learning the unique profiles and stories behind each component.
The experience culminates in sampling the iconic Pursuit United Bourbon and Toasted Oak Collection Bourbon to realize how the sum is greater than the parts.
“We’ve been privy to everything the large distilleries had to offer so we decided to give whiskey lovers something they can’t do anywhere else. These inside looks are what makes Pursuit Spirits so special,” said Kenny Coleman, COO & Co-Founder. “These immersive experiences take guests beyond the traditional 51% corn tour and focus on how barrel maturation and blending are the real stars of the show.”
