Oof, what a headline... The Ohio Department of Liquor (OHLQ) has announced the availability of Rabbit Hole brand Cavehill single barrel selections hitting the shelves this week (week of August 7th). There are six different label designs across the selection, designed by artist Beppe Conti and are named after Shakespeare plays. Each bottle is $149.99 + tax.
Cavehill is an original concept by Rabbit Hole and is their signature four-grain Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. A typical bourbon mash bill contains three grains, but adding a fourth grain to the mix allows for even more combinations and room to make unique expressions.- Barrel #118E28B - 109.8 Proof (54.9% alcohol) - Caramel and grape bubble gum on the nose leads to a tobacco and leather spice flavor profile before a long peppery finish with in-front heat.
- Barrel #818F25B - 109.2 Proof (54.6% alcohol) - A complex aroma marked by notes of coffee, caramel, maple syrup, dark fruit, and toasted hazelnut passes through to flavors of raisin and black pepper and a sweet, long, hot finish.
- Barrel #1418F25A - 110.1 Proof (55.05% alcohol) - The aroma of brown butter and cocoa segues nicely to tasting notes of brown sugar, caramel, honey, and baked apple prior to a finish of fall spice, pepper, honey and wheat.
- Barrel #918E28A - 108.8 Proof (54.4% alcohol) - Light cherry, toffee, and smoky aromatics complement a salt-and-pepper flavor profile imbued with a long finish.
- Barrel #418F25B - 110.5 Proof (55.25% alcohol) - On the nose are pepper, spice, toasted sugar, and tobacco and on the palate notes of clove, star anise, and blood orange with a finish that begins light and breezy and ends satisfyingly woody and sharp with more notes of anise and star anise.
- Barrel #1218F25A - 108.5 Proof (54.25% alcohol) - The inviting aromas of apple and maple pass through to a buttery, creamy flavor profile with pleasing notes of almond, marzipan, white chocolate, and kettle corn.
My Take
I think the one I'm most excited about is Macbeth... mainly because it looks like a portrait of The Golden Girls. I really like the idea of single barrels with a theme and custom artwork. It makes these releases much more meaningful. I think this is a cool release... $150 is a lot to pay for a single bottle, but at least this is something semi-bespoke and tells a story. I think if you see this out and about, it's definitely worth a look.
