The Irish whiskey brand of Redbreast has announced the final bottling in its Dream Cask Collection and it is the oldest release yet. The Redbreast Dream Cask Zenith Edition is a 38 years old single pot still whiskey and was distilled in 1985. Initial maturation in American oak ex-bourbon casks for 27 years before being transferred to a single first-fill ex-Oloroso sherry cask in 2013 for a secondary maturation.

The new whiskey will be one of the last that Billy Leighton, the legendary Master Blender Emeritus of Redbreast, works on. The Redbreast Dream Cask series was first released in 2017 and has seen annual bottlings. The Zenith Edition is bottled at 45.3% ABV and will be available to Birdhouse members from May 20. For further information - click here. A bottle will cost €1,000.

Diageo have announced details of their annual Fèis Ìle bottlings, which are always highly anticipated. This year sees three limited edition single malts - one from Caol Ila and two from Lagavulin.

The Caol Ila 13 years old Fèis Ìle 2024 Edition (pictured, above) has matured in French oak ex-Ruby Port casks sourced from the Douro Valley in Portugal. These were hand selected by Eva Cumming, the Distillery Manager at Caol Ila. It has been bottled at 54.5% ABV and there are just 1,404 bottles. Each will cost £185 and will only be available from the Caol Ila distillery, starting on Caol Ila Day (May 27) until sold out.

The Lagavulin 10 years old Fèis Ìle 2024 Edition (pictured, above) features rare heavily peated spirit and has been matured in a combination of re-fill and heavily charred casks plus first-fill ex-bourbon barrels. It is released at 56.7% ABV and there are just 1,800 bottles. Each will cost £175.

The final whisky is the Lagavulin Skies of Fèis Ìle (pictured, below), which is a 29-year-old single malt. Maturation has been in a single heavily charred American oak ex-Amoroso sherry hogshead. The cask is expected to yield just 250 bottles, each of which will be hand-filled and signed by Jordan Paisley, the Distillery Manager at Lagavulin, at the distillery on Lagavulin Day (May 25). The price will be £2,500 per bottle. You can pre-order your bottle via www.malts.com.

Review | Cù Bòcan Creation #6

This whisky is the sixth bottling in Creations Series from the peated Highland single malt brand of Cù Bòcan (pronounced koo-bock-un). The Cù Bòcan Creation #6. joins the series, which uses unorthodox cask combinations to create unique flavour profiles. In this case the casks are 9-year-old ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry casks and 10-year-old ex-Jamaican rum casks, which have been fused together to create the final whisky.

Cù Bòcan spirit is distilled for a short period each winter at the Tomatin distillery. Tomatin is located in the Scottish Highlands, about half way between Aviemore and Inverness. It was founded in 1897 by a group of Inverness businessmen and was originally named Tomatin Spey. In 1907, it became Tomatin, the name of the local village. Tomatin is currently owned by the Takara Shuzo Corporation, who purchased the distillery in 1986. It has a current annual capacity of five million litres.

The Cù Bòcan Creations #6 is a small batch of just 8,400 bottles and they are available in selected world markets. It is released at 46% ABV and is both non-chill filtered and of natural colour. A bottle will cost £60.

Our Tasting Notes

The colour is vibrant gold and the nose is highly aromatic and expressive. Aromas of golden syrup and crystallised pineapple leap out of the glass alongside a whiff of savoury peat smoke. Further aromas of rum soaked raisins, gingerbread and milk chocolate are also present, as are hints of caramelised peach, plum compote and a pinch of cinnamon.

On the palate this whisky is big, bold and uplifting. The peat smoke is much more prominent now than on the nose. This has a soft and savoury edge, which is reminiscent of dried heather and bonfire embers. It becomes slightly more peppery towards the finish and this adds extra depth. The smoke is compliments by some luscious fruity and sweet notes.

Dark dried fruit and tropical notes lead the way. There are notes of rum soaked sultana and chocolate coated raisins, which are complimented by juicy ripe pineapple and mango plus that caramelised peach from the nose. Spiced plum compote is also present. The lush fruitiness is complimented by an expressive sweetness - this comes in the form of Victoria sponge cake, treacle tart and golden syrup-like notes. Late hints of ginger and cinnamon give extra zip.

The finish is long and warming. The sweet and fruity characteristics slowly fade. Very slowly in fact. The result is that the sift gentle peat smoke and the warming spices are left to draw out the finish further. This gives a pleasant savoury quality and dryness.

What's The Verdict?

This latest addition to the Cù Bòcan Creations series is delicious. Both ex-rum and ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry casks contribute big and bold flavours to a whisky, and could easily have clashed with each other. But they marry superbly here. The gentle peat smoke aids this and seems to bind the strong characteristics from each cask together. We are really enjoying this series and seeing the directions that the spirit is pushed in with unorthodox casks or cask combinations. Where will they go for the next release?

The Islay distillery of Ardbeg has announced details of a forthcoming rare bottling that celebrates the regeneration of the distillery at the turn of the millenium. Ardbeg Y2K is a 23 year old single malt distilled in 2000 through a historic 50-year-old still, which was decommissioned shortly afterwards in 2001. The whisky is the brainchild of Dr. Bill Lumsden, the Director of Whisky Creation at Ardbeg.

The year 2000 was a pivotal year for Ardbeg and saw it finally return to full production following the takeover by The Glenmorangie Company in 1997. Prior to this, the distillery had struggled during the late 1980s and 1990s until it was renovated and rejuvenated under the new ownership. The new whisky will form the first part of a series that tells the story of this time.

Ardbeg Y2K has been matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, and is bottled at 46% ABV. It is both non-chill filtered and of natural colour. The new whisky will be available via UK specialist retailers and www.ardbeg.com from July. However, interest for buying a bottle can be currently registered on the website. A bottle will cost £670.

The SMWS have released a 40-minute documentary exploring the influence of sherry casks on Scotch whisky - Scotch and Sherry: A Flavour Odyssey. The film follows the journey of a cask from the oak forests of Galicia in northern Spain to the cooperages and sherry bodegas of Jerez in the south. Along for the journey are Richard Goslan, the Editor of the Society's Unfiltered magazine, and Euan Campbell, the Head of Whisky Creation at the Scotch Malt Whisky Society

The 40-minute documentary charts each stage of a sherry cask's life and introduces the people that make the casks and the sherry. The latest Drop & Dram pack has been released to accompany the film and features three sherry cask matured single malts for £35 - to purchase this pack click here.

The film will be screened each Saturday during May at the Society's Glasgow venue in Bath Street with further special screenings at their Edinburgh venue in Queen Street (May 16 and 23) and at The Machrie Hotel on Islay during the Fèis Ìle festival (May 29 and 30). The Islay distillery of Ardnahoe, which is owned by Hunter Laing & Co and began production in 2018, has announced the release of its inaugural bottling - the Ardnahoe Inaugural Release 5 years old. It is the first new whisky from a new distillery on Islay since Kilchoman in 2009. Ardnahoe, which translates as 'height of the hollow' from Scots Gaelic, sits on the rugged northeastern coast of Islay and makes a mid-range peated style of spirit.

The Inaugural Release 5 years old marks the beginning of a series of whiskies that Ardnahoe will launch during 2024. It features barley malted at Port Ellen Maltings on the island and is peated to a level of 40ppm. The whisky is bottled at 50% ABV and is both non-chill filtered and of natural colour. The bottle will be available from May 10 via www.ardnahoedistillery.com, and shortly afterwards in specialist retailers in the UK and beyond. The cost will be £70.

"This is a very proud moment for the Laing family. Our passion and knowledge about Scotch whisky has endured for three generations now and it is a momentous milestone to be releasing our very own, traditionally crafted single malt whisky from our own distillery on Islay."
Scott Laing | Business Development Manager at Hunter Laing & Co.

The Isle of Harris distillery has released four new batches of its Scotch single malt - The Hearach Batches 9 to 12. This follows the inaugural release of last September which saw the previous eight batches sell out in 4.5 hours. The Hearach is the Scots Gaelic name for the Isle of Harris. The new batches are larger and designed to get more people tasting the whisky.Batches 9, 10, 11 and 12 are all bottled at 46% ABV and are both non-chill filtered and of natural colour.

Each batch release differs due to alterations in individual casks types used for maturation, barley peating levels, marrying times and distillers’ cut-points on the still. The four bottlings feature individual maturation in first-fill ex-bourbon, ex-Oloroso sherry and ex-Fino sherry casks before a 12-week marrying period. There are 12,000 bottles available in each batch and are available in specialist whisky retailers in the UK and 20+ markets worldwide, plus via www.harrisdistillery.com. A bottle will cost £65.

Review | Drop & Dram by The Scotch Malt Whisky Society

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (or SMWS for short) have launched Drop & Dram – a monthly subscription service aimed at allowing whisky enthusiasts in the UK to explore new flavours without having to pay for full annual membership. The new initiative, which formed part of the company's 40th anniversary celebrations when introduced in November last year, costs £45 per month. It is currently exclusive to the UK.

For this you receive a pack of three cask strength whiskies. Each is bottled at 5cl (50ml) and taken from the SMWS’ vast portfolio of casks. This currently includes over 180 distilleries from Scotland and the whisky world beyond. Each month has a different theme and allows access to exclusive tasting notes and video links about the samples.

A huge benefit of signing up for Drop & Dram is temporary monthly membership to the SMWS. This gives the opportunity to purchase full 70cl (700ml) bottlings upon release from the website and visit one of the four excellent Society venues in the UK – Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leith, and London. It also allows participation in exclusive events and tastings.

The SMWS was established in 1983 and bottles whiskies exclusively for its members. Most are single cask single malts and at natural cask strength with roughly 150-200 casks bottled per year. They use a unique numbering system for their bottlings and do not reveal the distillery identity - the first number is the distillery where the spirit was produced and the second is the number of casks released by the SMWS from that distillery. Each bottling also has a creative name.

We are sampling Set #4 entitled Drams Without Borders. This includes two Scotch single malt whiskies, one from Speyside and one from the Highlands, plus an English single malt. Drop & Dram Set #4 was released in March 2024 and was the latest pack at time of writing. For further information and to purchase a pack - please visit www.smws.com/drop-dram.

Our Tasting Notes

Drop & Dram | 39.284 Push Pineapple, Shake A Bee
Distilled 5 December 2011/ 11 years old/ first-fill ex-bourbon cask/ Speyside/ 62.1% ABV

The colour is pale gold and the nose is highly aromatic and fresh. Vibrant green apple and freshly mown grass aromas mingle with vanilla custard, honey and luscious juicy pineapple. There are also hints of white chocolate, pink peppercorn and candyfloss.

On the palate this whisky is equally as vibrant. Notes of freshly sawn oak shavings, vanilla pod and honey rise first. These are quickly joined by juicy tropical fruits - think of ripe pineapple, peach and apricot especially. Some creamed coconut, lemon curd and crisp green apple are also evident. There are hints of woody spices (imagine cinnamon, cassia and a tiny scratch of nutmeg) and cocoa powder. The white chocolate and candyfloss from the nose also develop. The finish becomes particularly peachy and is reminiscent of caramelised peach with vanilla custard. The woody spice and dryness draw out the length well. A classic ex-bourbon cask Speysider.

Drop & Dram | 55.85 Passionate Desire
Distilled 28 September 2009/ 13 years old/ first-fill ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry hogshead/ Highlands/ 57.5% ABV

The colour is a deep coppery amber and the nose is laced with fruity and sweet aromas. Dark muscovado sugar, caramel and treacle sponge cake mingle with warm orange marmalade, brandy-soaked raisins and cherry compote. Hints of milk chocolate, almond patisserie and dates sit in the background.

On the palate this whisky is rich, viscous and decadent. Notes of golden syrup and treacle mix with caramelised bitter orange, fresh warm gingerbread and a pinch of cocoa. It is big and bold with plenty of dark sugary sweetness. Then comes the fruit and then a building spiciness and dryness. Think of black cherry jam and chargrilled figs in combination with the brandy-soaked raisins from the nose and a hint of marzipan. The spice and heat build and evolve from initial notes of gingerbread through to clove-studded almond tart and finally, warming baking spices - imagine cinnamon bark especially. The finish sees the sweetness fade slowly to leave a drying tannic feel.

Drop & Dram | 137.20 Potted Shrimp & Salmon Terrine
Distilled 25 October 2012/ 9 years old/ second-fill ex-bourbon barrel/ England/ 60.9% ABV

The colour is deep gold and the nose is smoky, sweet and woody. Peppery peat smoke and expressive charred oak aromas rise from the glass first and are quickly followed by golden syrup, apricot jam and a twist of burnt orange peel and zesty lemon. Hints of vanilla sugar, honey and dessicated coconut back things up.

On the palate this whisky packs an immediate peaty punch. Charred oak and ashy charcoal embers hit first and these slowly subside to allow further characteristics through. Chargrilled lemon and bitter orange notes are followed by golden syrup, honey and a hint of milk chocolate garnache. There is also a distinct pepperiness that builds and adds heat. Savoury and umami elements develop slowly and are reminiscent of black tea, old cigar box and a hint of cedarwood. Some toasted spices also come through - think of cinnamon bark, mace and clove with a hint of coriander seed. This spice and dryness dominates the finish, which becomes woody and ashy with plenty of tannins and white pepper.

What's The Verdict?

Drop & Dram is a great initiative from the SMWS and offers a good way of sampling their cask strength single cask whiskies without having to buy a full-sized bottle or annual membership. We like the fact that you can pick and choose which month's packs to subscribe to, depending on your personal tastes and preferences, and that you get a temporary membership with all the benefits it brings for that month.

The whiskies in Set #4 Drams Without Borders perfectly showcase what the Scotch Malt Whisky Society do well - cask strength whiskies in traditional casks. The selection of the three in this set is clever and takes you in three differing directions. All are tasty whiskies and the size of sample allows you to revisit them a couple of times. Well worth checking Drop & Dram out.
