The Ohio Division of Liquor Control (OHLQ) has announced a never-before-released mash bill blend for Ohio from WhistlePig called Home-Field Hog Batch. It will be available in select stores the week of December 13 with a price of $64.99 plus tax.

In order to track down a bottle, you'll need to head to this website (link) to see if any stores in your area were allocated any bottles. Per the State website, store locations will be made available on a daily basis as stores receive their shipments so, if interested, you may need to do a fair amount of work to find a bottle.

The mash bill for this release is 50% Rye/ 40% Wheat/ 10% Barley and features 50% of WhistlePig’s farm-to-bottle rye whiskey. It comes in at 86 proof (43% alcohol).

My Take

In theory, this seems like a good deal. Sadly, there were no details given on how much allocation there will be so trying to find this, may be a waste of time... especially with the people who seem to know ahead of time and camp out at stores... I think the reddit thread below sums up the limited releases by OHLQ. If you are lucky enough to stumble on this, I'd recommend picking up a bottle. The price seems reasonable and this could be a good starter on getting to know WhistlePig a little better.

As I'm sure you know, this week is the Pappy Van Winkle lottery through the Ohio Department of Liquor... perhaps our only opportunity to purchase a bottle without spending multiple paychecks.

I've been tracking the OHLQ lotteries since 2018 so we're looking at three historical years. As you can see by the chart below (or not see, the image appears a bit blurry), the range of bottles is from 359 to 493 per lottery and the odds of winning have never been higher than 0.688%... or 1 in 145... meaning... if I live another 141 years, I should definitely win.

One other thing to note, is the number of entries spiked last year. A lot of that could be due to the pandemic with more people at home. It could also be that interest in bourbon continues to rise. It'll be really interesting to see how many entries are received this year.

The takeaway for me is the odds of winning are really bad, but, like being a Minnesota Twins fan... this is the year it all comes together for me!

Booker’s Announces Next Release – 2021 – 04, "Noe Stranger’s Batch"

Booker's Bourbon has announced their latest release titled 2021 - 04, "Noe Stranger's Batch." This is the fourth Booker's release this year and is named to celebrate Booker Noe... From Fred Noe, Beam Family 7th Generation Master Distiller...

This batch celebrates the genuine, social nature of my dad, Booker Noe, and the way he could turn a stranger into a friend for life in no time.

This release comes from four different warehouses (3% came from the 2nd floor of 9-story warehouse H, 27% came from the 5th floor of 9-story warehouse D, 39% came from the 6th floor of 9-story warehouse J, and 31% came from the 5th floor of 7-story warehouse Q). I have no idea what any of that means, but the main takeaway is the bourbon came from four locations and was mixed together (different warehouses and locations within the warehouses will result in different aging and flavors).

This release was aged 6 years, 6 months, and 12 days... which is oddly specific. It comes in at 124.4 proof (62.2% alcohol) and contains the below tasting notes. No price was provided and previous releases have not made it to Ohio, however it is showing up around $120 online

Nose - Robust vanilla and caramel notes; slightly smoky.

Taste - Deep and complex flavors of vanilla, nuts and oak.

Finish - Long and full; perfect for easygoing sipping.

My Take

While I've never had Booker's, it has long been intriguing and I appreciate the multiple unique releases each year. That proof is also crazy high, which means in theory, you'll get longer out of the bottle than lessor proofs because the bourbon will be so strong or you'll need to water it down to drink (like me!). If you see this in a neighboring state, it might be worth picking up and giving it a go to get familiar with the Booker's brand.

This whisky is a new seasonal limited edition single malt from the north Highland distillery of Glenmorangie. The Glenmorangie A Tale of Winter is inspired by the cosy quality of a thick winter jumper and was created by Dr. Bill Lumsden, the Director of Whisky Creation at Glenmorangie. It follows last year's A Tale of Cake in the series. The whisky was initially matured in ex-bourbon casks before finishing for a period of time in ex-Marsala wine casks sourced by Lumsden from Sicily. The Glenmorangie A Tale of Winter is bottled at 13 years of age and 46% ABV. It is also non chill-filtered and will be available globally via selected specialist whisky retailers. A bottle will cost £75/ $105 US.

Glenmorangie is one of the biggest selling single malt Scotch whisky brands in the world and was founded in 1843 by William Matheson. It is located in the north Highland town of Tain and was originally named as Morangie, changing to its current name in 1887. Glenmorangie has an annual production capacity of six million litres and the 12 copper pot stills are the tallest in Scotland. They stand at over five metres (16.5 feet) tall. It also uses the hardest water of any Scottish whisky distillery in production, which bubbles up from the nearby Tarlogie Springs. The distillery and brand are currently owned by Moet Hennessey.

Our tasting notes

The colour is deep gold and the nose is rich, sweet and fragrant. Aromas of green apple, brown sugar and sultanas rise from the glass initially. These are followed by further aromas of golden syrup, vanilla custard and a hint of cocoa powder. With time background aromas of peach, gingerbread and malty cookies, plus a pinch of cinnamon.

On the palate this whisky follows a similar pathway to the nose. First up are expressive notes of crisp green apple and juicy sultana, with a suggestion of stewed pear with cloves in the background. These initial notes are supported further notes of fresh honeycomb, golden syrup and a hint of milk chocolate. Further hints of dried tropical fruits and lime zest also develop.

As the sweet and fruity notes begin to subside, it is the warmer and more savoury characteristics that begin to come to the fore. Robust cereals evolve to give wonderful structure and are backed up by notes of warm gingerbread, cinnamon, cloves and mace. The combination give a somewhat earthy feel. Even later there is a woody oak element that comes through nicely.

The finish is of decent length and becomes warmer and spicier with time. The honeyed dried fruits and sugary sweetness fade slowly to let the robust cereal and those mulling-type spices to take hold. Add in the robust cereals and late oakiness, and this whisky grips the tastebuds and holds on longer than expected.

What's the verdict?

This is another lovely offering from Glenmorangie and Dr. Bill, and we are liking the way that this A Tale Of series is going. Hopefully it will become a regular feature on the whisky release calendar. This is delicious and shows the depth and complexity that can be created with maturation in good Marsala barrels. Is it as good as A Tale of Cake? Probably not in our opinion. But that was one of our favourite whiskies for a long time, so would be difficult to beat anyway.
