In a move targeting college kids too lazy to mix whiskey and coke themselves... Diageo brand Bulleit has introduced two ready to serve crafted cocktails, an Old Fashioned and a Manhattan.

Adam Geissler, Bulleit Brand Ambassador says:

It can take time to master a Manhattan or Old Fashioned. Luckily bartenders are masters of their craft and have been skillfully making these cocktails with our whiskeys for years, so it was only right we had them help us create these products to help put bartender quality cocktails in the hands of people (21+) to enjoy without the time or fuss of cocktail preparation.

As mentioned, the two ready-to-serve cocktails are the Bulleit Old Fashioned Cocktail and the Bulleit Rye Manhattan. The Old Fashioned is bourbon whiskey, with the classic flavors of aromatic orange bitters and simple syrup, enhancing the hints of spice from the high-rye bourbon. The Manhattan Straight Rye Whiskey packs a punch with subtle deep flavor, that's balanced out by sweet vermouth and bitters which add a brilliant layer of complexity.

The cocktails come in both 375ml and 750ml bottles. They come in with a 75 proof (37.5% alcohol). The 750ml carries a $29.99 MSRP.

My Take

I don't think this product was built for me or most of my readers who prefer the complexity and uniqueness of whiskey and bourbon. Bulleit markets this because of 'the rise of at-home entertainment over the past few years, from impromptu dinner parties to small watch parties or those "just because" moments.'... However, if I have someone over and they want a drink, I'd be a better host by making them an Old Fashioned or Manhattan by hand. This is a hard-pass for me.

Additional information

The ingredients and whiskey-making process are the same as for Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey — 80% corn, 12% malted barley, and 8% rye, mellowed drop by drop through 10 feet of sugar maple charcoal before entering the barrel. My Take

When I first saw this, I thought I was going to sit this one out... but after a quick Google Search... the retail for these bottles goes upwards of $1000 (note: reselling bottles is illegal in Ohio). In terms of the lottery itself... what a pain in the butt to have to submit individually for each store. I don't think it would have been much more effort to do it by region or have the person select which location they want to pay for the bottle at (similar to EVERY OTHER OHLQ LOTTERY!!!). Alas. Anyway, this is a lottery I recommend entering.

Combining two of my loves, video games and bourbon... maker Ukonic (also maker of the XBox Mini-Fridge) has listed a Master Chief Decanter set available for pre-order for $119.99 with availability starting in April.

This officially licensed Halo home bar collection includes:
  • 56-ounce decanter (1) - in the shape of Master Chief's iconic helmet from the video games
  • 11-ounce whiskey glasses (4) - decorated with the UNSC insignia
  • Fluted stopper (1)

My Take

Three of my favorite things in life are video games, weimaraners, and bourbon... This hits 2 out of 3 (why aren't there weimaraners in the Halo universe?!!). If you're a gamer and enjoy the Halo games (for what it is worth, Halo Infinite was amazing and my favorite Halo game ever), this is a really cool licensed product. It also would make a great gift for the gamer in your life. I'm going on record that this is awesome.

One of my favorite articles of the year.... Woodford has announced their design for the 2022 Kentucky Derby limited edition bottle. This year’s bottle features the artwork of Kentucky native Jaime Corum, who is known for her horse portraits. The painting is title 'Dreams in Bloom' and shows three thoroughbreds racing surrounded by spring flowers, including the red roses of Derby.

Woodford Reserve Master Distiller Chris Morris says:
The attention to detail in Jaime’s artwork is remarkable – and so realistic. This year’s bottle celebrating the 148th Kentucky Derby will make a gorgeous addition to anyone’s bar.

A bit about Jaime Corum... she earned her Masters of Fine Arts from The University of Kentucky says this about the bottle:

For me, Dreams in Bloom symbolizes that greatest moment on the First Saturday in May when the horses are in the final stretch of the race. A trio of front-runners have separated from the field, and from these three, one winner will emerge. They strive with every sinew in their being for the lead, giving their all. In this moment, time stands still, colors heighten, the roar of the crowd disappears until, in a flash, the new champion crosses the wire in front. For that fortunate one, the dream of winning the Kentucky Derby comes true.

My Take

The first Woodford Kentucky Derby bottle debuted in 1999, which was the 125th edition. I've been collecting these for a few years and my first bottle is the 2006. I don't collect a ton of bourbon because I think bourbon is for drinking, but this is my deviation from that. I'll be on the lookout for this and will be purchasing as soon as I find one!

Brown-Forman brand Old Forester has announced the third installment of the 117 Series called 1910 Extra Old. This limited-edition release is Old Forester's standard 1910 Old Fine Whisky that is then added to a secondary barrel for an additional 18 months.

Master Taster Jackie Zykan says:
This release in The 117 Series is a curious exploration into the intensity of the proprietary heavily charred 1910 barrel. This liquid was allowed to rest for 18 months in this secondary barrel, extracting significantly more of the heavily charred influence.

1910 is an Old Forester release that commemorates October 22, 1910 when a fire on the bottling line halted the production of Old Forester. Mature whisky ready to be bottled was instead stored in a second barrel.

This release comes in at 93 proof (46.5% alcohol) and will be available beginning on February 23rd. It carries an MSRP of $49.99 and offers the following tasting notes:

Nose: On the nose, this expression showcases notes of dark brown sugar, sugared pecan and rich chocolate.

Taste: The palate brings with it a medium-bodied expression with a depth of warmth that swiftly transitions from sweet notes of intense caramel to the spice of dried tobacco.

Finish: A balanced ending that is gently rounded out with notes of green apple and raw walnut.

My Take

Fifty dollars for a double barrel seems like a decent price. Sadly, only the original Old Forester 1910 is showing up on the State of Ohio website as being for sale in Ohio. If it does come here, I would compare this to the Woodford Double Oaked... it's a bit higher proof (93 for Old Forester, 90 for Woodford Double Oaked) and a bit cheaper ($49.99 for Old Forster vs. $52.99 Woodford Double Oaked). With that, it's definitely worth giving a look if you see this in the wild.
