As first reported in Episode 23 of the Bourbon & Banter Podcast, the Bourbon Crusaders are partnering with the Society for Transparency in American Whiskey (STRAW) for a release that can only be described as a bourbon nerds dream. Fred Noe, Jimmy Russell, Jim Rutledge & Chris Morris got together and hand-selected barrels from each of their respective distilleries. For the first time in history, barrels from Jim Beam, Wild Turkey, Woodford Reserve, and Rutledge’s stock of Cream of Kentucky barrels will be mingled for what the most anticipated release in bourbon history. The Four Horsemen Kentucky Straight Bourbon is scheduled for a fall 2022 release.

Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller Chris Fletcher continues to hit it out of the ballpark with their end-of-year Special Releases. On the heels of last year’s epic barrel-proof rye (yes, it was that good), this year’s Coy Hill High Proof release is the highest proof whiskey Jack Daniel’s has ever bottled. I’ve been a fan of the standard barrel proof for several years, so when I heard about this release, I was eager to see how the increased 10-15 points of additional proof would affect it.

A whiskey using a new barrel aging concept has taken double gold at the International World Whiskey Awards. Smith and Johnson's Small Batch Bourbon took home double gold in the bourbon category and was named "Best Overall Whiskey" in the Small Batch American Whiskey category. A surprising win for a whiskey that was distilled just 72 hours before entry into the competition.
Smith and Johnson's patent-pending "barrel tunnel" approach to aging takes the new make distillate through a 300-foot-long charred oak "tunnel" that's 28 inches in diameter. Half the barrel tunnel is level 3 char, with the final half being a level 4 "alligator" char. Changing the char level midway through the whiskey's journey brings out additional wood and chocolate notes.
