The First Bourbons To Be Produced Entirely at Bardstown Bourbon Company

The Origin Series Bourbons are the first whiskeys released by Bardstown Bourbon Company that were entirely distilled and bottled in-house. Both bourbons are 6 years old. The Origin Series Bottled In Bond Bourbon is a wheated bourbon. The other, called simply “Origin Series Bourbon” is a high rye bourbon. I have reviewed it recently.

A Special Bourbon

The Origin Series Bottled In Bond Bourbon is truly special. Why, you might ask? Well, Steve Nally is the Master Distiller at Bardstown Bourbon Company. Coincidentally, for many years Steve Nally, was also Master Distiller at Maker’s Mark. And, as you may know, Maker’s Mark is a wheated bourbon, and wheated bourbons are Steve Nally’s favorite. It only follows that this wheated bourbon was the first distillate to come off of Bardstown Bourbon Company’s stills back in 2016.

In addition, Steve Nally feels that bourbon must age at least 6 years to achieve its best flavors. So, that is why Bardstown Bourbon Company allowed these bourbons to age for 6 years before bottling them.

Tasting Notes

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉🏻Nose: Buttery caramel, honey, vanilla, cherries and plums; mild alcohol
👉🏻Taste: Caramel, vanilla, sweet cherries, honey, oak & a bit of grassiness towards the end
👉🏻Finish: Cherry lingers on. Spice builds and is joined by cinnamon. Oak and some char become apparent with a dryness developing. The finish is long, with a moderate burn.

The nose is full and rich, dominated by buttery caramel. The sweetness is relatively light. There is some bright fruit, like cherries and plums, with almost a Sweet Tarts character. The taste brings more caramel and cherries. Cinnamon and spice dominate the finish with a dry oakiness developing and becoming more dominant later on. These latter characteristics make the Origin Series Bottled In Bond Bourbon a bit atypical compared to the usual wheated bourbon.

Summary

The Origin Series Bottled In Bond Bourbon is another excellent bourbon. Not surprisingly, it is a bit different than the high rye Origin Series Bourbon, having more buttery caramel than butterscotch. It’s also different than other wheated bourbons, like Maker’s mark, due to the spice in the finish. If you enjoy wheated bourbon and want to try one that is a little different, then this one is worth giving a try! Cheers!

Traverse City, MI (January 24, 2023)–Traverse City Whiskey Co. (TCWC), an award-winning portfolio of premium whiskeys and bourbon made in Michigan, officially broke ground on the future site of its new whiskey production facility, in Traverse City.

The company’s rapid growth has exceeded its current distilling capacity, which resulted in a portion of its annual production to be outsourced to out-of-state partners. The first-of-its-kind distilling campus in Michigan will enhance the company’s current production facilities and tasting room located at 201 E. 14thSt. in downtown Traverse City, which has become a popular destination for tens of thousands of area residents and visitors since 2012.

Set on 35acres of land in the countryside, the new facility will accommodate every step in the whiskey production process(mashing, fermentation, distillation),allowing the company to significantly increase production of its award-winning portfolio of premium whiskeys and bourbon, to as many as 24,000 barrels of whiskey each year.

Part of the property will alsobe dedicated to growing grain to be used in the company’s various distillations. The facility will also help to meet increasing demand for TCWC’s portfolio of products, which includes its best-selling Premium Cocktail Cherries and Cocktail Crate craft mixers.

The 70,000 square foot campus, which will be built in partnership with Mathison Architects and Erhardt Construction, will feature a state-of-the-art traditional rack house, dedicated processing and packaging spaces, administrative offices,a visitor center & tasting room, and spectacular indoor and outdoor hospitality spaces.

The new facility will also create approximately 100 new jobs for the surrounding community and afford TCWC the ability to support other Michigan distillers in need of capacity for their own growing brands.

“We’re thrilled to break ground on this incredible new facility which will allow us to expand operations and exclusively produce our award-winning whiskey right here in our hometown of Traverse City,” said Chris Fredrickson, Co-Founder and President, TCWC. Our new headquarters will be an all-encompassing campus that will provide a unique immersion in whiskey culture and industry and will add a new experience to the thriving Northern Michigan agritourism industry. It will provide numerous jobs and attract new and returning visitors to our beautiful region. We can’t wait to welcome our friends into our new home.”

Known as the “Whiskey of the North,” the 100% family-owned craft whiskey company produces straight bourbon and its signature cherry whiskey which have become top selling craft whiskeys statewide and across the U.S. The team draws upon its early family roots in the distilled spirits industry dating back to the late 1800s, sourcing all their grains (corn, rye and malted barley) from the Midwest.

The distilling team, led by Chris Fredrickson, Jared Rapp and Moti Goldring, makes an award-winning portfolio of quality products, inspired by patented distilling techniques invented by Fredrickson’s great grandfather that were approved by the US PTO during the prohibition era.

In 2018, TCWC introduced its Premium Cocktail Cherries which have grown to be the leading premium cocktail cherry nationally, sold in all 50 states. In 2019, TCWC acquired Cocktail Crate premium craft mixers and opened its first tasting room in Metro Detroit: The Outpost, in Ferndale.

TCWC products are available via the brand website and at on- and off-premise establishments in more than 30 U.S. States.

PRESS RELEASE From Heaven’s Door

Heaven’s Door Spirits, Bob Dylan’s portfolio of award-winning American whiskeys, announced the release of Bootleg Series Vol. IV, an 11-Year-Old Wheated Bourbon.

Named in tribute to Bob Dylan’s famed series of album collections, the highly acclaimed Bootleg Series is a portfolio of rare whiskeys and special blends released annually that was co-created with Bob Dylan and sourced and blended by the Heaven’s Door team.

The brand’s Bootleg Series Vol. IV release features an 11-Year-Old Wheated Bourbon finished in Islay Scotch Casks, bottled at 111 proof.

The bourbon is presented in a handmade ceramic bottle featuring an oil painting by Bob Dylan titled Lighthouse in Maine (2017) from the second installment of “The Beaten Path” collection. Each bottle is housed inside an individually numbered, bespoke leather journal. The suggested retail price is $499.99 and it is now available at HeavensDoor.com and select retailers nationwide.

Nicknamed “Whisky Island,” Islay is one of the five producing regions of Scotland whose identity is protected by law. Islay whiskies are known for being the most robust in flavor, with a renowned dry and peaty smokiness. Heaven’s Door secondarily ages their mature wheated bourbon for almost a year in seasoned Scotch casks to impart the unique characteristics of peat, resulting in a dram that’s reminiscent of toasting marshmallows over a campfire, per the brand.

The bourbon is presented in a handmade ceramic bottle featuring an oil painting by Bob Dylan titled Lighthouse in Maine (2017) from the second installment of “The Beaten Path” collection. The oil painting celebrates Dylan’s own well-traveled path and invites viewers to accompany him as he criss-crosses the USA through the backstreets, alleyways, and country roads. Each bottle is housed inside an individually numbered, bespoke leather journal with a unique design that nods to the wheated bourbon.

Bootleg Vol. IV is best enjoyed neat, on the rocks or with a splash of water and features the following characteristics:

  • Age: 11 Years
  • Proof: 111
  • ABV: 55.5%
  • Nose (Brand Provided): Toasted marshmallow, sandalwood, sugar plums, marzipan, creamed corn
  • Palate (Brand Provided): Winter campfire, mesquite bbq, leather, piped tobacco, cedar, bone marrow

PRESS RELEASE From Four Roses

Four Roses, the Kentucky bourbon brand synonymous with Valentine’s Day, and OSMO Salt, purveyors of premium, chef-selected salt, debuts the latter’s first-ever spirit-infused flavor: OSMO x Four Roses Toasted Vanilla Bourbon Salt.

The first-ever co-branded culinary product from Four Roses, the salt was created for cocktail enthusiasts for rimming bourbon drinks and for home chefs for adding a robust yet sweet touch to meals this Valentine’s Day. OSMO x Four Roses Toasted Vanilla Bourbon Salt is now available for a limited time on OSMO Salt’s website for $18.99. A gift set that includes the salt and a bottle of Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon is also available to purchase on ReserveBar.com for $60.99.

OSMO Salt: PURCHASE HERE

To create OSMO x Four Roses Toasted Vanilla Bourbon Salt, clay-based red sea salt was harvested from between Hawaiian lava rocks, and then purified to give it its vibrant red color before allotting the salt time to breathe for optimal full flavor absorption. Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon was then poured over the crystals, which evaporates naturally once a combination of solar light and wind is applied. This process allows the bourbon and the salt to maintain their natural compositions. The result is a full body infused flavor that maintains the integrity of
both the natural salt and Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon.

“As a brand built on a story of romance, we believe that the best way to enjoy bourbon is to share it with those you love,” said Brent Elliott, Four Roses Master Distiller. “This salt allows Four Roses to shine through in a way unlike anything we’ve done before. The toasted vanilla flavors perfectly balance out the spice notes of our Small Batch Bourbon, and the brininess of the salt subtly enhances the whiskey’s flavor and smoothness even more.”

Nick DiGiovanni, American chef, MasterChef finalist, internet personality and entertainer, co-founded OSMO salt in 2021 in an effort to elevate at-home cooking, constantly innovating to bring unique flavors to his consumers. With over 9.5M TikTok followers, Nick’s viral recipe videos – which have featured celebrities and notable names – often utilize OSMO Salts for seasoning and adding the perfect finish to dishes and drinks.

“I created OSMO because salt has the unique ability to round out any dish. In this case, our Toasted Vanilla Bourbon Salt adds an unexpected touch and uniquely balances the flavor of whiskey cocktails,” said Nick DiGiovanni. “This Valentine’s Day, we want to show you that you can be your own mixologist or chef and easily create restaurant-quality craft cocktails and meals at home with one simple ingredient.”

Four Roses was built on a love story dating back to 1888 when founder Paul Jones, Jr. became smitten by the beauty of a Southern belle. Upon proposing to her, she said that if her answer were “yes,” she would wear a corsage of roses to the upcoming grand ball. On the night of the ball, she arrived donning a corsage of four red roses, thus giving the Kentucky brand its name and motto, “Made with the same passion since 1888.”

Welcome to Inbox, our weekly round up of whisky news and PR material that has found its way in to our WFE email. It was created as we cannot write full articles or do justice to every piece received. It features items from around the world of whisky and is published by us each Friday. Within Inbox we aim to write a few lines detailing each press release/piece of news/PR event that we have received and provide links, where possible, for you to find out further information.

Here is the round-up of the news from this week.

________

Glenallachie
The Speyside distillery of Glenallachie has announced its first new release of the year - the Glenallachie 2012 Vintage CuvĂ©e Wine Cask Finish. The whisky has been created by Billy Walker, the Master Blender of Glenallachie. CuvĂ©e is a French term used in the wine sector to reference a blend that comprises more than one variety of grape. In this case Walker has used ex-red wine barrels from four different wineries across three European regions - Valpolicella from Italy, plus Languedoc and two Premier Cru ClassĂ©s from Bordeaux in France.

All the liquid was distilled in 2012 and was initially filled to American oak ex-bourbon casks. This was then transferred to the four ex-wine barrels for a 20-month finishing period, before being married together. The whisky has been bottled at 9 years of age and 48% ABV. It is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. The Glenallachie 2012 Vintage Cuvée Wine Cask Finish will be available in selected global markets and will cost £54 per bottle.

Glen Scotia
The award-winning Campbeltown distillery of Glen Scotia has announced the latest addition to its core range - the Glen Scotia 21 years old. The new whisky bridges the gap in the range between the 18- and 25-year old expressions. The whisky has been created using both re-fill ex-bourbon and re-fill American oak casks, before these were transferred for a six month finishing period in first-fill ex-Oloroso sherry casks. The casks were hand selected by Iain McAlister, the Distillery Manager.

The Glen Scotia 21 years old will be produced in batches of 2,500 bottles annually. It is bottled at 46% ABV and is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. Bottles will be available to purchase through selected specialist whisky retailers globally and via www.glenscotia.com. Each will cost ÂŁ265.

Macallan
James Bond Indicia Â© 1962-2022 Danjaq and MGM. All Rights Reserved

The popular Speyside distillery of Macallan has released a new collection of single malts to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the James Bond movie franchise. The Macallan James Bond 60th Anniversary Collection has been created in collaboration with EON Productions, the film makers behind the franchise.

The collection comprises six limited edition bottles inspired by the six decades of 007. Each bottle features an original illustrative design and colour to denote the decade it represents. The distinctive packaging brings to life the creative development process of the films, through a behind the scenes exploration of the James Bond archives.

The whisky is the same across the six bottlings and this has been created by Kirsteen Campbell, the Master Whisky Maker at Macallan. It is bottled at 43.7% ABV. Each bottling will cost ÂŁ700 each and will go on sale in selected luxury and specialist whisky retailers in the UK from February 19. It will be available exclusively one day earlier on February 18 from Harrods, the famous London department store.
