Plus, two High West A Midwinter’s Dram expressions, a red wine cask finish for Basil Hayden’s signature bourbon, and more new whiskies.

Fall is in full swing, and so are new whisky launches. In a burst of good news for Pappy fans, the 2022 Van Winkle lineup has been announced, and with it the word that more bottles than usual are available this year. Does that mean it’ll be easier to get your hands on one ahead of the holiday season? Not necessarily, but here’s to staying optimistic.

The Van Winkle whiskeys aren’t the only specialty releases making their debut this week. There are two new whiskies from Hibiki—a cherrywood-finished blend and a 30 year old whisky—both of which are highly limited. Knob Creek, meanwhile, has introduced a rarity of its own, an 18 year old bourbon that marks its oldest release to date, and High West has unveiled the 10th edition of A Midwinter Night’s Dram, along with a distillery-exclusive special to commemorate the 10th anniversary. From Scotland, Glendronach has debuted Grandeur Batch 11—aged for 28 years—while Gordon & Macphail is offering three new ultra-limited, ultra-aged bottlings. Read on for full details.

UK-based Never Say Die has released what they are claiming to be the first English bourbon.

Never Say Die bourbon was distilled and matured four years in Kentucky, then “ocean-aged” on a six-week trip across the Atlantic, before finishing its maturation at the White Peak Distillery in Derbyshire, England, where it was bottled at cask strength of between 56% and 61% alcohol by volume [112 proof to 122 proof] and is said to contain notes of caramel and spice.

The bourbon’s name – Never Say Die – is named after a 1954 racehorse of the same name, which was revived with a shot of whiskey after a difficult birth and went on, three years later and at odds of 33-1, to become the first American-born horse in 70-years to win the Epsom Derby. The bottle design reflects the colors of jockey Lester Piggott, who rode Never Say Die to victory in the Derby.

Never Say Die is being made available for $90 per bottle.

Campari Group owned brand Wild Turkey has announced a new limited release titled Master's Keep Unforgotten. This release is a high proof, extra-aged variation of Wild Turkey Forgiven (which is a discontinued limited release). The premise is that the original Forgiven release was a mistake by mixing a young rye and mature bourbon.

Wild Turkey's Master Distiller Eddie Russell says:
Twelve years ago, I tasted the result of the distillery mishap that would become Wild Turkey Forgiven and was amazed. It was unlike anything I had ever tasted before, and I knew we had stumbled upon something special. Master's Keep Unforgotten pays homage to this happy accident, perfected with a secondary rye barrel aging in our pre-prohibition Rickhouse B – the favorite of my father, Master Distiller Jimmy Russell.
The Master's Keep Series was started in 2015 and is highlighted by experimenting with aging techniques and finishes. Unforgotten comes in at 105 proof (52.5% alcohol). It is a combination of 13-year-old bourbon and 8- & 9-year-old rye and carries a $200 MSRP.

Nose: Fruit-forward with notes of caramel and oak
Taste: A swirl of caramel, dried fruit, and sweet oak
Finish: Notes of dried fruit, honey, black pepper, and baking spice

My Take

This sounds like a really cool release and the price isn't outrageous. Your best bet on finding this is probably online or directly at the distillery. If I saw this, I would buy a bottle and save for special occasions or keep out on display as the bottle looks really cool.

Company Distilling launched its first Limited Release: Cask Strength Bourbon on September 29, 2022. The Tennessee distillery listened to fan demand for a cask strength bourbon after the successful release of their Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished with Maple Wood in November of 2021.

Company Distilling’s Cask Strength Bourbon is an approachable and balanced original wheated bourbon recipe uncut for maximum flavor with a bold maple finish. The limited-release bourbon is bottled at 121 proof or 60.5% ABV.

Within the first 36 hours of the pre-sale, all 350 commemorative gift packages sold out. The commemorative package included a Company Distilling Cask Strength Bourbon bottle signed by Master Distiller Jeff Arnett and two rocks glasses.

“We’ve been waiting for the right moment to release the cask strength version of our flagship bourbon and leading into the holidays seemed like the perfect opportunity. We’re on the heels of opening both of our distilleries in Thompson’s Station and Townsend, TN, and now we’re able to add an additional product to our portfolio lineup,” said Company Distilling Master Distiller, Jeff Arnett.

Balcones made it’s reputation with their very first whiskey, Baby Blue. This was partly because although they weren’t the first operational whiskey distillery in Texas (that was Garrison Brothers), they were the first one to release a product. The other reason is their innovative approach in making that product; Baby Blue was made out of a mash of 100% Hopi blue corn. Drawing on grains outside the usual distiller’s yellow corn or red winter wheat is a widespread practice nowadays, but in 2009 it was very rare and using blue corn unheard of.

The distillery continued to work with its seminal blue corn mash during its expansion into a mid-sized distillery, equipped with Forsyths-made copper pot stills. True Blue was a 100 proof version of Baby Blue; Brimstone took the blue corn whiskey and smoked it. Now comes the latest Balcones blue corn whiskey, Big Baby.

Big Baby is a bonded whiskey, which is a huge departure from its progenitor. Baby Blue was aged in “baby” five gallon barrels, and consequently for a matter of just several months. The Bottled in Bond law requires a minimum aging period of four years, and Big Baby is, in fact, aged for five years. Such a period in 5-gallon barrels would produce a noxiously over-oaked whiskey, whether those barrels were new or used.

Instead, Big Baby follows with recent Balcones releases by aging in used tequila barrels. Exactly what source of those tequila barrels the distillery uses isn’t known, but the choices available to tequila-makers is as varied as to the Scotch industry: Patron Extra Anejo alone uses two types of French oak, Hungarian oak, used American whiskey barrels and  new white oak barrels. So, the actual wood of the barrel and its size could vary greatly, with the only known constant being that it was used to make aged tequila. That said, these are all big barrels, equal to or greater in size than the 53-gallon, American Standard Barrel.

The Whiskey
A pour of Big Baby has a coppery look to it, not unlike the way rye whiskeys usually look.

I decided to conduct a little experiment with this particular tasting. I got out all the bottles of tequila in my house (there are a few), and had them open side by side with my pour of Big Baby. I compared nosings, and didn’t pick up even a hint of tequila on the nose. Combine that with my memory of what agave syrup smells like, and I don’t think the tequila barrel aging plays that prominently in the scent of this whiskey. I’m so convinced of this that I think if you’re getting tequila, it’s because of a preconceived mind playing tricks.

That said, what I did pick up was a toffee and butterscotch sweetened current, accented by corn husk. Where the tequila did begin to sing was on the palate. There the core current became caramel and agave syrup, the corn aspect turning to a fire-roasted ear of sweet corn, one that you just can’t get the bits of husk ash off of. The finish went down ashy, earthy and spicy.

The Price
A bottle of this fetches $60.

E.H. Taylor

More big news from the hot release month of October. Sierra Nevada Brewing Company announced this week their highest ABV beer ever in partnership with Buffalo Trace Distillery.

Ladies and gentlemen, meet E.H. Taylor Bourbon Barrel Aged Bigfoot, a barley wine style ale aged an unheard of seven years, the last year spent slumbering in E.H. Taylor Small Batch Bourbon barrels. Sign us up please.

It’s the first beer collaboration for the E.H. Taylor brand.

E.H. Taylor Bourbon Barrel-Aged Bigfoot is 15% ABV. It comes in in 750-ml. bottles in a canister reminiscent of the E.H. Taylor, Jr. packaging.

Per the brand, the beer brings rich flavors of molasses, caramel and burnt sugar, the brewery reports, balanced by whole-cone Pacific Northwest hops found in Sierra Nevada’s cult-classic Bigfoot Ale.

“The time in the barrels has changed the beer and made it so complex,” says Sierra Nevada Product Manager Terence Sullivan. “We love collaborations. But something of this magnitude — some of the finest beer and some of the finest bourbon in the world — it’s really something special.”

Colonel E.H. Taylor Bourbon Barrel-Aged Bigfoot will only be available in select markets and in limited quantities through Sierra Nevada’s online shop.

“Both Sierra Nevada and Buffalo Trace Distillery are pioneers in innovation amongst their categories,” says Buffalo Trace Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley. “Collaborating on a project like this is quite special. Both companies have made a massive impact on pushing the boundaries of craft beer and American whiskey, leading the foray into premiumizing the industry.”
