PRESS RELEASE: PROVIDED BY JEFFERSON’S

Jefferson’s Bourbon – a brand known to literally rock the boat when it comes to whiskey experimentation – launches the newest expression in the popular Ocean Family series, Jefferson’s Ocean Aged at Sea® New York Limited Edition. True to Jefferson’s experimental spirit, founder Trey Zoeller and his team pay homage to New York with a bold new non-chill filtered bourbon that is cut to 98 proof – using the city’s famous water.

“Like New Yorkers themselves, the city’s water has a magical quality about it. Inspired by legendary foods that are made tastier because of New York water – world famous bagels, pizza, and doughnuts – I thought it would be interesting to experiment with it and see what effect it would have on this Kentucky-born product,” says Zoeller.

“Jefferson’s Ocean Aged at Sea® New York Limited Edition contains beautiful depth; it found its sense of adventure out at sea and developed layers of flavor enhanced not only by the aged-at-sea process – the constant motion of the water, the climate, salty sea air, and barrel agitation – but also by the excellent quality of New York’s water and that it’s non-chill filtered. All of this helped to yield a much bolder whiskey that reflects the boldness of the city in which it was finished.” says Zoeller.

Prior to landing in New York and as part of the unique finishing technique for which the Jefferson’s Ocean series is known, the barrels of bourbon traveled through ports around the world, sailing through rough and smooth seas and experiencing a wide range of temperatures between the North Sea, Europe, the Atlantic Seaboard, and the Panama Canal. When the barrels finished their voyage, they arrived at Manhattan’s first distillery since prohibition, where New York water was used to cut the bourbon to 98 proof and create this bold new liquid.

Similar to Jefferson’s Ocean Aged at Sea® New York Limited Edition, New York’s famous water takes a journey all its own – traveling from the Hudson Valley and Catskill Mountains that are as far north as 125 miles from the city. The water’s soft, almost salty quality has been known to add flavor, texture, and even “strengthen” the foods and beverages it’s added to, and our bourbon is no different. The combination of non-chill filtering, New York’s water, and the journey our barrels took to get here created a bourbon that contains layered flavors: textured caramel, cigar, and leather on the nose, cinnamon mid-palette, and a Crème Brûlée, nutmeg, salty finish.

Jefferson’s Ocean Aged at Sea® New York Limited Edition is bottled at 49% ABV.  It will be available on-shelves and at local NYC on-premise accounts starting November 2022 (SRP $99 /750mL). Basil Hayden announced this week the release of its newest limited edition, Basil Hayden Red Wine Cask Finish.

Created by eighth-generation master distiller Freddie Noe, this expression blends the signature Basil Hayden Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey with bourbon partially aged in Californian red wine casks. Per the brand, the vanilla and charred oak notes of classic Basil Hayden intertwine with flavors of dried fruit and sweet nectar imparted by the red wine cask for a layered, complex, yet approachable result.

Tasting Notes (Brand Provided)

Rich amber and toasted brown hues make for a warm welcome into the whiskey, which then gives way into aromas of dried fruit notes with cherry, vanilla, and toasted oak on the nose. Upon the first sip, flavors of sweet ambrosia are complemented by complex levels of charred oak. Rounded off with a warm, crisp finish, the highly versatile flavor profile of Basil Hayden Red Wine Cask Finish makes it ideal for serving in aperitif-style cocktails.

Spoiler, I really dig the Highland Park Cask Strength, it was a standout at a recent Malt Nuts and hearkens to some of the older HPs I’ve enjoyed. And by older I mean historical, not age stated. The current releases barely hold a candle to their slope-shouldered brethren of the past, but there is a hint of that essense here. Though speaking of bottles…

Highland Park Cask Strength Review

While I do hate all the Thor, Lokie, blah blah blah stuff they’re doing, I do actually like the current bottle design when you look at it in pieces. Sitting on the shelf I don’t like looking at it, but when you focus on the details, it’s functionally nice. The twist + cork cap they use I’ve loved since they started doing it, the celtic knot work makes it easy to hold on to, but the shape is awkward on the shelf and that’s really where It grinds my gears.

But, as I’ve said many times, this isn’t a design blog, it’s a whisky blog, so let’s get to drinkin’!

Highland Park Cask Strength Tasting Notes

EYE
Coppery

NOSE
Butterscotch, malt, dried fruit, leather, vanilla, graham cracker, ash and baking spice.

A nice aroma that blows the current 12 out of the water.

PALATE
Inky smoke, oak, butterscotch, toasted bread, malt, cocoa and Nilla wafers.

A lovely warm taste that gets a tad more candy-sweet with water.

FINISH
Long -> Graham, ash, dried fruit and caramel.

BALANCE, BODY and FEEL
Decent balance, medium-full body and a warm oily feel.

Highland Park Cask Strength – Overall Thoughts and Score

Adding water brings out increasing layers of spice and vanilla-lead candy sweetness. It starts out more oaky, dark fruit, char and caramel, but with some air and water it blossoms into something more deep and interesting. It’s a whisky that needs a smidge of patience.

Once it opens, it’s a delight. You get a wee hint of the sherried HP glory of the past and more smoke than in any HP I can currently remember which tamps down some of the sweetness and brings more balance. Highland Park Cask Strength is a tasty whisky and I’ll definitely be grabbing another bottle when the next batch comes out.

SCORE: 4/5 (good, definitely recommend ~ B+ | 87-89)

We all have our favorite people and brands we follow on social media. I hope it’s Bourbon Pursuit, but there are a lot of people that get categorized as influencers on every platform like Instagram and TikTok but every brand also needs to be on social media. Since alcohol is a heavily regulated product, there are ton of rules in place to keep the industry compliant. And for the most part, many are breaking these rules on a daily basis and could potentially face legal action from government bodies like the FTC. To help get us all more educated on the subject, we’re joined by Nichole Shustack who’s the Counsel at McDermott Will & Emery law firm. I ask Nichole a bunch of questions about the things I see on social media everyday when it comes to influencers getting free bottles, disclosing brand connections, bourbon charity raffles, and the legal implications that follow.

Show Notes:

  • Above the Char with Fred Minnick (@fredminnick) talks about wine for the american whiskey drinker
  • How did you get into the legal space with alcohol?
  • Do you scroll through TikTok and say “that’s not compliant!”?
  • Are there government regulations involved with social media and alcohol promotion?
  • How are brands breaking the rules of social media promotion without knowing?
  • If a bottle was sent to an influencer, can an influencer or brand get fined from the FTC without disclosing it?
  • Who is going to come after influencers if they don’t disclose their relationships or free bottles?
  • What is the maturity level or different social media platforms?
  • Does a whiskey influencer need to be cautious about having children, pets, or Santa Claus in their posts?
  • Is it legal for influencers or companies to give away alcohol as a part of a promotion to gain followers?
  • What are the legal implications for people that hold bourbon charity raffles?

Irish Distillers has released its latest expression, Jameson Single Pot Still, as a new addition to the Jameson family. Celebrating the traditional style of Irish whiskey after which it is named, Jameson Single Pot Still is a throwback to an era when Irish whiskey reigned supreme.

Skilfully created under the watchful eye of Master Distiller Kevin O’Gorman, Jameson Single Pot Still is crafted from a mashbill of malted and unmalted barley before being triple distilled for a rich, unmistakable taste experience. The new Jameson Single Pot Still is then matured in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, while also introducing the subtle flavor contribution of three different types of Virgin oak casks: American, European, and Irish. The finished result is a complex, spicy, and smooth symphony of flavors and aromas. The ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks bring elements of sweetness in the form of dried fruits, notes of vanilla and fudge, that Jameson fans the world over will know and love. The addition of the three virgin oak cask types provides a hint of toasted oak and elevated woodland spices. This subtle addition allows the Jameson Single Pot Still to express its traditional spiciness while elevating the overall taste and flavor in this modern classic.

Kevin O’Gorman, Master Distiller at Irish Distillers, said, “We are delighted with the release of Jameson Single Pot Still. It has been an honor and a joy to work on rebuilding a traditional Jameson expression with an innovative twist and bringing a new member into the Jameson family.

“While crafting this whiskey, the team at Midleton Distillery worked hard to find the exact balance and flavour profile for our finished product. We wanted to showcase the quintessential notes of the single pot still style by blending the familiar ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks before bringing a new dimension with the introduction of the virgin oak casks.”

Deirdre O’Carroll, Blender, adds: “Through some trial and error along the way, working with different prototypes and flavour combinations, we found the right balance for our Jameson Single Pot Still. We have created a whiskey that is robust and spicy by single pot still’s nature, but also intriguingly complex and bearing the trademark Jameson smoothness. We couldn’t be more proud of the results.”

Bottled at 46% ABV, Jameson Single Pot Still whiskey is priced at RRP €60 per 700ml bottle and is available in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Dublin Airport, the UK, Brand Homes and Jameson online.
