Making its way to or reaching shelves right now is the latest batch of Booker’s Bourbon for 2022. This one is dubbed The Lumberyard Batch, referring back to the time that Booker Noe worked in a lumber yard prior to entering the family trade at Jim Beam and embarking on his legendary bourbon career.

More important than the name, however, is the age statement. When Booker’s was first introduced in the early 1990s, it was as a cask strength bourbon billed as being between 6 and 8 years of age. So it still is, but since the brand moved to individually titled batches, it has mostly been much closer to 6 years than to 8. This is so much the case that I have considered it noteworthy when a batch was just shy of 7 years. This was the case with the first batch of this year, “Ronnie’s Batch,” which at 6 years, 11 months and 22 days was the oldest regular Booker’s seen in years. It was also much closer to the mellow, sucker puncher style of bourbon that Booker’s helped defined 30 years ago: one could drink a double of this at the bar and have no idea how strong it was until they got on their feet!

Now comes Lumberyard, which is 7 years, 1 month and 7 days and 124.8 proof. And it too is reminiscent of that sucker puncher experience of yesteryear.

The Bourbon
A pour of this one takes a surprisingly light cast for a mature, potent bourbon. Although the amber leans towards brown, it’s not a dark liquid.

The scent coming up out of the Glencairn glass here absolutely oozes vanilla, but behind that comes sweet notes of berries and honey. The oak is there too, but that is the faintest note.

Sipping brings the bourbon into better balance, as the palate isn’t so vanilla-forward, the oak takes a step up, and it develops a spicy aspect. The core is still vanilla and honey, and I do mean honey rather than the usual candy corn or brown sugar sweetness. The berries from the nose evolves into apricot, and that hint of oak turns tannic and becomes a full character in the performance. A dash of pepper helps bring out that woody note. The finish runs light and spicy, so it lingers without being at all overpowering.

Booker’s 2022-02 is a mellow, easy-sipping, superbly rounded bourbon. If you missed Ronnie’s Batch, run out and grab this throwback release of Booker’s.

The Price
Officially, this is supposed to go for $89.99

Lux Row Distillers announced the newest member of the Daviess County Bourbon brand family: Daviess County Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished in Lightly Toasted American Oak Barrels. A limited allocation of 3,000 six-pack cases of Daviess County Lightly Toasted will reach retail shelves across the country later this month at a suggested retail price of $49.99 per bottle.

Daviess County Lightly Toasted features its namesake brand family’s signature combination of ryed and wheated bourbon mashbills, which is aged four-plus years in charred-oak barrels and comes in at 96 proof (48% ABV). The lightly toasted barrel finish is what gives this limited-edition release its own unique flavor profile, while giving consumers additional options within the Daviess County family.

“I’m proud to honor the rich history and tradition started in 1874 by the Daviess County Distilling Co. with this latest expression of our Daviess County Kentucky Straight Bourbon,” said Lux Row Distillers master distiller John Rempe. “Finishing our traditional Daviess County bourbon in lightly toasted American oak barrels imparts aromas of caramel, vanilla and hints of oak on the nose, while delivering flavors of sweet caramel with notes of vanilla and coconut on the palate. This unique flavor profile is certain to become a fast favorite among fans of the brand”

Daviess County Lightly Toasted is the first in a series of annually offered toasted-barrel finishes for the Daviess County brand family, which also includes perennial variants Daviess County Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Daviess County Cabernet Sauvignon Finish and Daviess County French Oak Finish.

Brown-Forman has announced over $30.5 million dollar investment in The GlenDronach Distillery to significantly increase production facilities at its homeplace in the Valley of Forgue in Aberdeenshire. Global demand for The GlenDronach has tripled since 2016* as whisky connoisseurs worldwide discover the distillery’s rich sherry cask matured Single Malts. The investment will support long-term future growth for The GlenDronach.

This is the second phase of investment by Brown-Forman in the historic distillery after renovations of The GlenDronach Visitor Center in 2020 which created an enhanced visitor experience with a new tasting room, whisky bar, lounge and retail space.

Proposed plans at the home of the richly sherried Highland Single Malt will build on centuries of whisky-making heritage, dating back almost two hundred years to the distillery’s establishment by James Allardice in 1826.

As part of the development program, significant attention will be paid to preserving the proudly historic site and craft of fine whisky-making on the grounds of the former Boynsmill Estate, including the restoration of the former maltings building as a working production area. All existing buildings and the iconic courtyard will remain, retaining the rich heritage and traditional craft of whisky making at The Glendronach for future generations.

Briggs of Burton will serve as the principal contractor, along with Blyth & Blyth as civil architects. The three-year phased project will prepare the distillery to more than double capacity and will improve operational energy efficiencies.

Laura Tolmie, Distillery Manager, said: ”As a small, traditional Scottish distillery, we’re very proud to be custodians of such a revered Single Malt at The GlenDronach. I’m delighted that this significant investment in the long-term future of the distillery is secured, preserving our rich heritage while ensuring we can meet the increasing demand for The GlenDronach at home and around the world.”

The Ohio Division of Liquor Control (OHLQ) has announced the release of eight barrels of single-barrel selection of Rebel Distiller’s Collection appearing in stores this week (week of August 1) at a price of $39.99 plus tax.

The Distiller's Collection is a highly wheated bourbon recipe that is aged at least four years and is bottled at 113 proof (56.5% alcohol). Since these are single barrels, each barrel will have a distinctive flavor. The tasting notes for each barrel are:
  • Barrel #7784612 - Hints of marshmallow and cereal with a deep body of warm vanilla

  • Barrel #7755876 - Aromas of caramel and oak opening to a sweet spice

  • Barrel #7784799 - Velvety cocoa and toffee flavors, reminiscent of a fine gourmet chocolate truffle

  • Barrel #7784805 - Soft, sweet aroma complements a pleasant brown sugar caramel profile

  • Barrel #7784804 - Nostalgic notes of fresh baked goods and drizzled honey

  • Barrel #7784807 - Rich caramel opening to bright flavors of baking spice and candied citrus

  • Barrel #7784808 - Vanilla and warm cinnamon sugar with subtle hints of cherry cordial

  • Barrel #77810980 - Sweet cream cake and overtones of vanilla and oak cascading to a pleasant spiced finish

It isn't known how many bottles are available, but to locate a bottle, use the OHLQ bottle finder.

My Take

$40 + tax isn't horrible to pay for a four year single barrel bourbon. I'm not usually a huge fan of wheat heavy bourbons, but this would be worth giving a hard look if you find a bottle of this out and about.

Time for some more delicious whiskey picks! Here’s what we’ve been drinking…

Luke’s Pick

Back in 2020, Buffalo Trace threw the whiskey world a curveball and decided to revamp one of its bottom shelf bottles into a whole new lineup of whiskeys. McAfee’s Benchmark went from being a go-to bottom shelf pour to a lineup of five whiskeys: Top Floor, Small Batch, Single Barrel, Bonded, and Full Proof. So what do we know about the whiskey? Not much, other than this whiskey presumably comes from mash bill #1, is aged for a significantly shorter period of time than other Buffalo Trace products, and all of these iterations come in at the $20-$25 price point.

Now if you know anything about my preferences, it should be no surprise that I immediately grabbed the Full Proof release. Bottled at entry proof of 125, Full Proof is the highest proof whiskey in this lineup, and in my opinion, delivers the best sipping experience.

On the nose this whiskey is a butterscotch bomb! In addition to the rich butterscotch, there is just a touch of ethanol with hints of vanilla, spice, and barrel char. On the palate, the higher proof is immediately noticeable, not just because of a heavier ethanol punch, but also because of the thick mouthfeel and bold flavors. The spice hits quickly mid-palate  along with plenty of brown sugar, milk chocolate and baking spice…just like a chocolate chip butter crunch cookie! The finish is medium-long with some lingering spice, plenty of those rich sweet notes, and some subtle oak.

This is a bold and flavorful sipping whiskey that comes in at the perfect price point. Don’t be afraid of that screw top bottle…the whiskey inside is worthy of your time. Grab yourself a bottle of this release, or any of the newer Benchmark releases, and come join us on the porch.

Jon’s Pick

Old Grand-dad is, in my opinion, one of the Jim Beam Distillery’s home runs. Take all those Beam products, line ‘em up, and there’s a better than even chance that I’d go for the OGD 114. I like any good pour neat and this one certainly fits the bill. But the 114 proof upfront spiciness really pops over ice.

How does it taste? It pops on the palate with high proof spice. Hold on for 4-5 seconds and it magically melts into bourbon vanillas and caramels, and a bit of cinnamon. It finishes long, finally fading…but it’s not over. You’ve prepped your palate for OGD. Your next taste is melodic!

This guy should be on every bar. Make it a go-to in your cocktails. It has more punch for the buck than a wide array of higher priced offerings. When someone says take your best shot, don’t hesitate to pour the Old Grand-dad 114. Cheers!

As always, stop by the original Market Square Liquors on Timberlane Road in Tallahassee to pick up these bottles, and then come find us on the porch!

Cheers y’all!

Michter's has announced their only release of any 10 year products with the July release of the 2022 edition of their 10 Year Single Barrel Rye.

Michter's President Joseph J. Magliocco said:
It may be the only release we do of a 10 Year whiskey this year, but it's a really special one. At Michter's it's about never compromising on quality rather than maximizing sales.

The suggested MSRP is $185 per bottle. No tasting notes were provided. Previous editions of the 10 year rye are showing up on the OHLQ website, but nothing that matches the 2022 release. With that, I'm not super optimistic we'll have any opportunity to purchase this in Ohio.

2021 Release ($170)

2020 Release ($160)

2019 Release ($160)

My Take

As I previously wrote about, Michter's has cancelled their 2022 10-year bourbon release so this will be your only opportunity for a 2022 10-year Michter's product this year. It's interesting the price is up 8.8% this year and up almost 16% since 2020. With that trend, it won't be long until this retails for upwards of $200.

My opinion of this hasn't changed... $185 is a lot of money to pay for a single bottle... especially if it isn't barrel proof.

What do you think? Drop a note in the comment box below.
