If you’ve met my wife, you will know that she has a bit of a glassware problem. We have so many whiskey glasses that we’ve had to sort them. We have the ones we use regularly. We have those that are pretty and sit on knick-knack shelfs. And we have boxes of those that don’t fit into either category in our storage facility. So because of the multitude of glassware we own, I seldom buy more.

Unless we are on vacation, that is. This is how we got so many in the first place, I like souvenirs.

I also like cocktails. And so when Total Wine decided to stock what had the possibility of being the perfect cocktail glass in amongst the bourbon, I noticed. And since I am always on the lookout for content, I thought I’d put Corkcicle’s Whiskey Wedge through its paces and bring you along for the ride. Total Wine was selling it for about $25. The Corkcicle website charges the same.

So first off, what is the Corkcicle Whiskey Wedge? Basically, it’s a glass that comes with a silicone mold that freezes ice into a wedge shape in the glass. The tagline on the box is “Goodbye, Watered Down.” The company claims that the wedge shape of the ice minimizes surface area and melting, resulting in a drink that is cold but not watered down.

Now that is the same claim that is made by makers of fancy ice sphere molds as well. And as I have one of these fancy ice molds, I’ve noticed that the large chunk of ice does, in fact, melt slower than the same volume of ice in cube form. So is the Whiskey Wedge better than a glass with a large piece of ice in it?

To find out, I conducted an experiment. I had a large ice cylinder left over from a photo shoot, so I used that in a glass alongside the frozen Whiskey Wedge. The experiment is simple. Freeze the Whiskey Wedge, and when it is ready, put the Ice Cylinder in the glass, and pour in two ounces of high-proof whiskey. I used Elijah Craig Barrel Proof. I initially did this exactly the way I would do it if I were making a cocktail. The glass was room-temperature. I never remember to pre-cool my glassware, and this was no exception. My notes are below:

  • After 2 minutes: the drink with the ice cylinder has noticeably melted compared to the Whiskey Wedge. The one with the cylinder tastes more dilute.

  • After 5 minutes: the Whiskey Wedge has visibly melted and changed shape.

  • After 15 minutes: the Whiskey Wedge is noticeably darker than the drink with the ice cylinder. The Whiskey Wedge is also still much less diluted in the mouth.

Initial Thoughts: Square glasses are hard to drink out of, but I'm impressed. The drink in the Whiskey Wedge held up much better than the one with the ice cylinder. I wonder how much of that is because the glass containing the ice cylinder was fresh from the cupboard, whereas the Whiskey Wedge was fresh from the freezer. The initial round goes to the Whiskey Wedge, but let's give it a fair fight. For try two, I will freeze both glasses.

  • After 2 minutes: Both pieces of ice have melted about the same visually. The drink with the ice cylinder is slightly more dilute in taste.

  • After 5 minutes: The dilution in the Whiskey Wedge glass has caught up, and both are about the same in taste.

  • After 15 minutes: The drink with the ice cylinder is visibly lighter in color, and the drink in the Whiskey Wedge is much stronger in the mouth.

Conclusion: The only knock on the Wedge is that I personally dislike drinking out of a square glass. It works as advertised. In the same time frame, it melted less than a comparable volume of ice in a different shape. Though freezing the glass containing the ice cylinder helped it close the gap, the Whiskey Wedge still worked better at not overdiluting the drink while still adding a bit of needed dilution. When I bought this, I thought it was a pretty gimmick. But it works as advertised.

I fully admit that this is not a very scientific experiment. If it were, I would have measured the volume of liquid that went in (which I did), let it sit for the allotted time, and then measured the volume of liquid that was poured out after time. I was not about to waste tasty and expensive bourbon that way, though, so you get this result instead. Overall, I’m impressed. I’ll probably be picking up a second glass to go with the first.

Southern Star Paragon Bourbon Review

The Southern Distilling Company is fairly large contract distiller, but they also produce their own line of whiskeys under the Southern Star label. Also under this label is the Paragon series of wheated bourbons. There’s a 92 proof verion, a Bottled-In-Bond and a Cask Strength Single Barrel. It is the latter that I am reviewing today.

Who is the Southern Distilling Company

The Southern Distilling Company is a fairly large contract distiller, but they also produce their own line of whiskeys under the Southern Star label. In addition, under the Southern Star label is the Paragon series of wheated bourbons. There’s a 92 proof version, a Bottled-In-Bond and a Cask Strength Single Barrel. It is the latter that I am reviewing today.

A North Carolina ABC Store Pick

This bottle was purchased at a North Carolina ABC store outside of Asheville thanks to the recommendation of one the employees. It bears no age statement, so is presumably at least 4 years old. The mash bill is: 70% corn, 16% wheat & 14% malted barley.

Tasting Notes – Southern Star Paragon Cask Strength Single Barrel Bourbon

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉🏻Nose: Apricot leather candy, burnt caramel, black cherry soda, vanilla & milk chocolate; noticeable alcohol
👉🏻Taste: Caramel and light honey sweetness; the sweet dried apricot candy continues…
👉🏻Finish: …into the long finish. Some char and spice develop. There’s a bit of an herbaceous earthiness, too. Noticeable burn with a long, warm, North Carolina hug!

Summary

In my experience, wheated bourbons really develop rich full flavors at higher proofs, and Southern Star Paragon Cask Strength Single Barrel Bourbon is no exception. Probably because I needed to get acclimated to the higher proof, its flavor, in both the taste and the nose, changed over the course of multiple sips. By the second or third sip, the sweet dried apricot leather candy flavor is omnipresent. There are some of the classic bourbon flavors in there as well, but also a creaminess and a bit of milk chocolate. The herbaceous earthy flavors that I get later on and in the finish are a bit of a surprise, but a nice contrast to the earlier flavors.

Conclusion

It always surprises me how variable the flavors can be from wheated bourbons. I do like this one very much. However, it is a single barrel, so your results may vary. Hopefully there will always be some similar flavors to this one in the other barrels. Have you had any of the Southern Star Bourbons? What did you think? Cheers!🥃

Craft whiskey distillery West Fork Whiskey Co. today announces the grand opening of its 30,000 square-foot agritourism facility, open to the public on August 20. In addition to expanded distillery operations, which will have the capacity to produce upwards of 5,000 53-gallon barrels each year, the new facility includes Mash House, a family friendly restaurant led by Executive Chef Carlos Salazar featuring elevated Hoosier classics; Stave, a 21 and older cocktail lounge; a 5,000 sq. ft. event center; retail space; and guided and educational tours – making it one of the largest agritourism facilities in the Midwest.

With the additional capacity, West Fork will be considered one of the largest craft whiskey distilleries in the country and employ approximately 100 Hoosiers.

“Today our vision of providing a one-of-a-kind Midwestern experience at West Fork comes to life, and our team is eager to introduce visitors to a taste of Indiana whiskey and local flavors,” said Blake Jones, co-owner of West Fork. “From craft whiskey tastings to our family friendly restaurant, there’s something for everyone here and we look forward to raising a glass with Indiana residents and visitors from near and far.”

Aligning with West Fork’s mission to maintain approachability in its products, Mash House and Stave will feature creative yet approachable food and drink options cultivated by Chef Salazar and beverage director Todd Tapp.

“The Mash House menu places a heavy emphasis on local ingredients to pay homage to Indiana’s deep agriculture heritage and offer foodies their favorite Midwestern fare with a twist. Visitors’ culinary experiences will be rounded out with a cocktail at Stave, where expert mixologists will craft West Fork seasonal signature drinks and classics alike,” said Salazar and Tapp.

First announced in 2020, West Fork broke ground on Phase 1, the current 12+ acre development, in July 2021.

“Indiana will be home to one of the largest craft whiskey distilleries in the nation and it’s because of a strong partnership, a community that prioritizes quality of life and a state that supports and specializes in agritourism,” said Governor Eric J. Holcomb. “Agriculture is the backbone of Indiana and I’m excited to see business developments like this pay homage to our heritage while providing endless opportunities for Hoosiers.”

“Over 2.5 million people visit the Grand Park Sports Campus annually,” said Westfield Mayor Andy Cook. “West Fork is a part of our state’s agricultural heritage and now it joins our tourism industry in Westfield. I’m thrilled that we have this partnership for our community.”

The $10 million+ development is located on the northeast corner of 191st Street and Horton Road across from Grand Park Sports Campus.

There are different options on the Internet for people who want to use their hobbies and pastimes to make money. Lucky people are those who can make money from their favorite pastime. For many people, gambling is their entertainment.

Although mixing gambling and drinking strong alcoholic drinks like whiskey isn’t recommended in order to preserve a clear mind for gambling, enjoying briny, malty, and deep aromas of scotch, bourbon, and other types of whiskey while gambling has become traditional.

Online gambling is developing very rapidly and the audience is constantly increasing. This is generating the interest of many players. Building a career in gambling is quite realistic. This is a great opportunity to combine your favorite thing and earn money.

Becoming a professional gambler is not difficult but you will have to make some effort to make a living from gambling. It is important to understand the risks you are taking and the challenges that await you in the future. Gambling requires time and money investment. If you play responsibly and wisely, you can not only have fun but also make good money.

Gambling: Hobby for Making Money

First and foremost, it should be your favorite pastime that you choose to enjoy. It is logical that if it brings you pleasure, then you will be willing to pay for it. Become lucky if you can win and use a successful strategy to do so.

It will be useful to familiarize yourself with popular gambling games that are used by gamblers around the world. If you have not played online casinos before, find out which games you might like. Use different strategies and skills to play like a true professional.

There are many different reviews and blogs on the internet hosted by experienced gamblers. Professional players share their experiences so that beginners can easily master the gambling industry https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gambling. It is important to choose a gambling platform with high payout percentages, various bonuses, a quick withdrawal system, and the availability of 24/7 support. In this review, you can read about the games that online casinos use.

Slots

In every online casino slot machines are the most popular section. This section of gambling attracts the attention of players with its ease and colorfulness. Here you can get an incredible experience and have fun. The advantage of slots is that even inexperienced players can play them.

All slots are based on a random number generator. Based on this, winning and success depends only on luck. Gamblers do not need to think about strategy, the right actions, and choose different ways to play. Usually slots are chosen to relax.

Playing slots is very easy. This involves pressing the start button and look at the screen as the reels spin. If a winning combination appears, the player receives a certain amount of winnings. Each game has a payout table in which you can see the potential winnings. It is recommended to choose games with the best payout tables and returns to the player.

The gambler gets money for a winning combination, and if not, he spins the reels again. There are different combinations that can bring a certain amount of winnings. Some bring insignificant amounts, while others can offer high amounts. This is all you need to know when playing slots.

All online casinos offer a wide variety of slots that vary in style, design, and theme. They can be traditional or modern. Reputable online casinos work with the best software providers, so all slots are licensed and they use fairness controls.

Slot machines can also have different numbers of reels. They mostly have 3 or 5 reels. The more reels, the harder it is to get a winning combination. Here is a table with some popular slots:

1. Ancient Gods
2. Ocean’s Treasure
3. Caesar’s Empire
4. Stacked
5. Aztec’s Milli
6. Atlantic Treasures
7. Arrogant Pirates
8. Popinata
9. Tower Fortuna
10. Asgard

Choose the best slots to play for money and have a great experience in the demo version without financial risks. Follow the news about new releases and have a good time.

Blackjack

Blackjack is a popular card game that has simple rules. The course of the game is often unpredictable. The main idea of this game is to collect a pair of cards that are as close as possible to the number 21 but do not exceed it. Each round begins with you betting and getting the first two cards.

Considering your score from the first cards and the dealers’ stock, decide whether you want to take an extra card to increase your chances of winning or leave the cards you have. Players should know how blackjack points are calculated:

  • An ace counts as either one or 11, depending on what the player’s best value is;
  • 10 and any face card has a value of 10 points;
  • numerical cards correspond to their value, respectively a deuce is two points, a three is three points, etc..

If a player scores more than 21 points, he automatically loses that hand. It is important to consider whether it is worth the risk of taking an extra card to make money in blackjack. You need to familiarize yourself with the rules of this game and practice. You can do this by using the free version and then betting for money.

Roulette

The popularity of roulette is probably known to all people. Everyone has heard about this game, even those who are not associated with the gambling industry. This gambling game is liked by many players to have a good rest and have fun. Here everything depends on luck, so you don’t need to make any strategies or decisions like in blackjack or poker.

Every round of roulette starts with you placing a bet. You can make it on a color, a number, a line, a square, or a column. Online casinos suggest combining different bets into one to increase your potential winnings.

When the bets are placed, the spinning of the wheel starts and you watch the ball to see where it lands. Your roulette winnings will depend on this. Modern online casinos offer different variations of this game, so you should familiarize yourself with the available roulette options before playing for money.

Poker

Online casinos offer a huge selection of poker. This popular table game has many fans around the world. Basically, the varieties of poker at online casinos have similarities in the rules and gameplay. At the beginning of the game, participants place a bet and then receive a payout, depending on whether the poker combination is successful.

It’s important to keep in mind that each game may have slightly different rules. There is traditional poker and many modern novelties, for example, Texas Hold’em, Jacks or Better, Wild Deuces, and many others. Gamblers can choose the best version of poker for themselves.

Video Poker

Video poker is a modern version of the board game that is a bit simplified. Here, instead of Texas Hold’em, there is a five-card draw. To play online video poker for real money you need to understand the peculiarities of this game. In video poker, players bet and receive five initial cards. You then decide which cards to discard and which to keep or trade.

The game is simple but when you get new cards, you have to understand how to create a winning combination. When it comes to the popular game of Jacks or Better, you have to make a pair of jacks or another better combination to have a chance of winning. Video poker combines the traditional versions of the table game and somewhat resembles slots

This new whisky is the latest limited edition release from the English single malt whisky brand of Wire Works. The Wire Works Necessary Evil Finish is just the fifth release from the Derbyshire-based White Peak distillery. The whisky has seen the distillery's lightly peated spirit initially matured in ex-bourbon barrels. This has then been finished for a short period in ex-beer casks. These had previously held Necessary Evil imperial stout brewed by the neighbouring Thornbridge Brewery. It is bottled at 51.3% ABV and is both non chill-filtered and of natural colour. There are just 2,059 individually numbered bottles.

The White Peak distillery was founded in 2017 by Max and Claire Vaughn. It is located in the village of Ambleside near Matlock, Derbyshire in the Peak District National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The distillery is housed within the former Johnson & Nephew copper wire factory on the banks of the River Derwent. They also produce rum and gin, as well as supporting the local community in eco-friendly and sustainability projects. It was Derbyshire's first ever craft distillery.

The Wire Works Necessary Evil Finish is only available via the White Peak website, with a small amount available from the distillery shop. A bottle will cost £65 and is restricted to one per customer. It is expected to sell out quickly. Some are still available at the time of writing.

Our tasting notes

The colour is deep gold and the nose is vibrant and expressive. Initial aromas include green apple, vanilla and golden syrup with a hint of chocolate and hazelnut. Underneath is a whiff of gentle peat smoke and this adds a savoury and earthy quality. There is also a distinct malty cereal aroma that adds further depth.

On the palate this whisky is instantly hot and peppery. This settles a little to allow other notes to evolve. The distinct malty cereal characteristic from the nose rises first and has a biscuit-like quality. This is quickly joined by some milk chocolate and golden syrup. The green apple is less crisp than on the nose and now resembles baked apple with butterscotch sauce drizzled over. The gentle and soft peat smoke lingers in the background and eventually wraps itself around all the other characteristics. There is a late hint of candied orange and rum-soaked dates. A pinch of savoury baking spices round things off well - think of cinnamon, powdered ginger and clove.

The finish is of decent length and sees the smokiness come more to the fore. This becomes a little ashy as time progresses. It is well supported by the biscuity malt cereal note and this drags out the finish, especially once the fruity and sweet notes die away. The warming baking spices also hold well.

What's the verdict?

We always love to sample new whiskies from new distilleries. After the long wait it is great to discover what a distillery is all about and the style of whisky that they are making. This is one of the best new whiskies from a UK craft distillery that we have tried to date. It has depth, complexity and comes in at an accessible price.

This backs up our initial thoughts after we tasted the Wire Works First Release earlier in the year. That showed huge promise and this Necessary Evil Finish does the same. Definitely a distillery to watch out for.
