After months of waiting, it’s finally here … Master’s Keep One. We’ve all heard the arguments: “toasted-barrel finishes are gimmicks,” “Wild Turkey must be running out of ideas,” etc. In all honesty, toasted-barrel finishes excite me as much as two fingers of Woodford Reserve. That’s not a dig on Woodford Reserve; it’s a fact. Yet, […]

Welcome to Inbox, our weekly round up of whisky news and PR material that has found its way in to our WFE email. It was created as we cannot write full articles or do justice to every piece received. It features items from around the world of whisky and is published by us each Friday. Within Inbox we aim to write a few lines detailing each press release/piece of news/PR event that we have received and provide links, where possible, for you to find out further information.

Here is the round-up of this week's news ...

________

Cutty Sark
The popular blended Scotch whisky brand of Cutty Sark has extended its core range with a 12 years old expression. The new whisky will be available initially in the travel retail sector in a one litre format. A 70cl version will appear in domestic markets next year. The brand owners, La Martiniquaise-Bardinet, launched the product earlier this week at the TWFA World Exhibition & Conference in Cannes, France. The Cutty Sark 12 years old is bottled at 40% ABV and the 70cl bottle is expected to retail at £20/ €24/ $24 US.

"We are very excited to be launching the Cutty Sark 12 years old. It has more Sherry notes than the original expression but still has the smoothness. The brand has huge awareness in a lot of countries and this is our first step to recruit the next generation of Scotch consumers."
Sylvia Bernard / International Marketing Director at La Martiniquaise.

Nc' nean
The eco-friendly independent craft distillery of Nc' nean has revealed a limited edition that will form the first part of a new ongoing series. The new series, entitled Quiet Rebels, is designed to highlight the people that work at the distillery and make Nc' nean what it is. The first is named after founder Annabel Thomas, whose mission was to create a sustainable and innovative distillery in the west Highlands. The series will also show off some of the distillery's early experiments. Nc' nean Annabel is a marriage of ex-bourbon and ex-Tokaji wine barrels.

The Nc' nean Quiet Rebels 'Annabel' is limited to just 4,504 bottles and is released at 48.5% ABV. It is available in the UK now via www.ncnean.com and selected specialist retailers. The whisky will also be available in very limited numbers in selected European markets at a later date. These include Belgium, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. A bottle will cost £65 / €78.

"The Quiet Rebels series celebrates the team that makes Nc’nean what it is. A group of passionate, skilled and adventurous people who are the driving force behind our mission to pioneer sustainable production. It is my turn to go first with this release but I cannot wait to see what the rest of our team come up with."
Annabel Thomas.

Blue Run High Rye Bourbon

Blue Run Kentucky Straight High Rye Bourbon is a small-batch whiskey and is the first Blue Run product with Bourbon Hall of Famer Jim Rutledge overseeing the production (on all previous Blue Run products, except Golden Rye, Jim served as the Liquid Advisor). Rutledge distilled this batch at Castle & Key Distillery. He is an American Whiskey legend whose distilling career spans over 40 years – notable tenures at Seagram’s followed by Four Roses.

“For a four-year-old Bourbon, I’m impressed with the quality of this release, and I look forward to evaluating the subsequent releases of these barrels – after additional maturation.”

ONLINE AVAILABILITY: It’s worth checking bluerunspirits.com, which does sell product online but is currently listed as OUT OF STOCK.

Blue Run Kentucky Straight High Rye Bourbon is distilled from a 65% Yellow Corn, 30% Rye, 5% Malted Barley mash bill. Per the brand, just 100 carefully selected barrels were chosen for this bottling, each toasted to a #4 alligator char and aged in Frankfort and Bardstown, KY. Blue Run High Rye Bourbon clocks in at 111 proof.

“As we celebrate our one-year anniversary as a company, we wanted to release something that really made a statement and honored the deep traditions of whiskey making,” said Mike Montgomery, CEO and cofounder of Blue Run Spirits. “The legendary Jim Rutledge helped us craft a bold, spicy Bourbon that even at 111 proof is incredibly sippable, with a pronounced, memorable finish. We are very excited to see how these barrels evolve over time for subsequent bottlings.”

Horse Soldier Bourbon

Yet another Distillery has broken ground in Kentucky, this one however to the scripted tune of $200 Million – placing it in a league of its own.

Ground breaking ceremony. Somerset, KY.

Horse Soldier Bourbon recently had its ground breaking ceremony in its future home of Somerset, KY, slated for 2024 completion. Adorned on a 227 acre former golf course and overlooking the extremely popular outdoor attraction Cumberland Lake (southeastern KY), this project has all the makings of captivating greatness. An addition of this magnitude could do wonders in expanding Bourbon Country Tourism to the southern region of Kentucky and playing heavily off the existing visitor foot traffic of the Cumberland Lake area.

The overall vision is outright impressive, with the potential to be other worldly. This will not be a a distillery. It will be a destination.

  • 27,585-square-foot distillery visitor center
  • 4,600-square-foot activity center
  • 5,000-capacity amphitheater
  • 500-person outdoor event space and adventure center
  • 3,200-square-foot wedding chapel
  • 60-key luxury lodge and 20 cabins
  • Retail village with about 15 different shops particularly focusing on local products.

Per Commonwealth Journal, the founders of Horse Soldier Bourbon were part of the first U.S. Army Special Forces unit to enter Afghanistan following the events of 9/11, crossing the rough terrain on horseback. Their story was illustrated in the film 12 Strong starring Chris Hemsworth.

Speaking of strong, there is a strong overlying connection to area of the future distillery site as the group of soldiers were training on the Cumberland River when they heard about the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

The brand is led by founders John Koko (President/CEO), Scott Neil, Bob Pennington, and Mark Neutch and is a member of the Foley Family of Wines (FFW) portfolio.

The distillery will incorporate a strong architectural salute to its military foundation and historical origins, having both a replica of America’s Response Monument at Ground Zero in New York and metal from the Statue of Liberty incorporated into the structure.

The stunning architectural charge is being led by well known London based firm Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (RSHP) who is a significant player in the ‘distillery destination’ world, most notably behind the Macallan single malt distillery and visitor experience in Scottish Highlands. A slew of Kentucky based architectural firms are also noted for their involvement.

It will be exciting to see the progress of this behemoth project with such a heart felt story at its core. We’re pulling for you HSB!
